Suspension, HDC, gearbox faults when lights are on
Hi,
I have a 55 plate D3 which drives fine when the lights are off. However, shortly after turning on the sidelights, main beam or the light switch to auto, the transmission will no longer change up through the gears although when manual is selected, it’s still possible to change gears. This is usually followed by an HDC fault and the suspension lowering. I’ve read the fault codes but there are so many, I can’t find anything which appears to be the source of the problem. I’va changed the battery and checked the alternator output voltage but still no luck. I’d be grateful for any advice/ideas.
Thanks very much.

its only a thought have you checked the earth lead from battery to chassis is good and free from corrosion ?
other than that you will have to post all fault codes and someone will be able to help

Thanks very much for the suggestion. I’ve had a look at the earth cable and it looks fine. I’ll post the codes when I have my reader back.

Check your brake / tail light bulbs, I suspect that a broken filament in a bulb is shorting between the light circuit and brake light circuit so when you turn on the lights it feeds current into the brake circuit and causes all the faults that you are experiencing.Stu

Thanks very much for the further replies. There is definitely something odd with the rear lights. With the lights off, brake lights work fine (which is how I checked previously) but with the lights on, the brake lights don’t work. I will change all the bulbs for Lucas and go from there.

I changed all four rear bulbs for Lucas items and everything appears to be working fine now. Thanks very much Oswiperus.
