Screeching noise when accelerating in the cold? Is it bad??!

Hi all,

Took my Disco out today and for the last two days I've heard firstly a faint, but now quite loud screeching noise when pulling away from junctions etc.

Seems to only happen between about 2500 rpm and 3000rpm ish and then stops, until next gear is chosen.

Seems to happen more seriously when the engine was cold. Pulled over about a mile away from home on return journey (about 5 miles in total) when engine was fully warmed, stuck it in neutral and gave it some beans, and no screeching noise. Drove home the remaining mile to house and no screeching then either.

Anyone have ANY idea what this might be? I've seen some people mention manifolds, and others mention something to do with the exhaust, but I've no idea.

Anyone experienced anything like this before?

Cheers all.

Hi, I spent months trying to get to the bottom of a similar noise, more of a loud moan than a screech, and usually under load, worse uphill when pulling away. After much fannying around with all sorts it turned out to be the viscous fan clutch. New fan fixed it. Not sure if this helps but is easy to test.

Auxiliary belt tensioner? When the bearing in those go they can screech like that.

Is there any way to test that at all?
