Should i buy an IID Gap Diagnostic tool??

Hi folks,

just a bit of advice, newly bought my Disco3 and been under her almost daily at moment........ mostly mechanical bits at moment (apart from a possible suspension issue!) but i like to do most stuff myself....

Question is, do you really need an IID tool to work on these vehicles?
Are the other cheaper alternatives a simple no go? (ie more reader than tool)

Thanks for your thoughts

Al

yeah, kinda figured that it wasn't essential........alots of D3s on the road and not all with IID tools!

Guess ill plan on getting one sooner or later, sooner if i need one for my suspension problem!

Why isn't there a cash icon!!!! lol

Must admit I bought my D3 with an airbag light on , me thinking it will be a loose wire Whistle

Got the iid and saved me a fortune in garage fees with tracing faults , they wanted £500 just to remove the headliner and at least another 1k to look for the fault @£180 per hour

After replacing Several airbags , being , Curtain , seat, pretensioners , loose wires , was all sorted Thumbs Up ( along with invaluable help from the forum I may add Bow down )

Know i wouldn’t be without an iid

Just bear in mind whilst it might seem expensive you will get back at least 1/2 to 2/3rds of the new cost when you come to sell it as they are always in demand 2nd hand.

I would also recommend an IID. The only cheaper alternative I would consider is the iCarSoft *but* it doesn't do all the things the IID can do, it isn't nearly as user friendly and it doesn't have anything like the support you get with an IID. The one I bought only cost me about £85 though and for that I think it was a good investment. I tend to keep it in the car and leave the IID at home.

The iCarSoft will read and clear faults but it wont, for example, do a suspension calibration or program an ECU.

As someone that isn’t in the least bit technical, even my IID BT has paid for itself already and proved extremely useful for solving a few problems. So I would definitely recommend.

Also worth noting, back street garages (no insult meant) will charge at least 40 quid to read your fault codes and main dealers getting on for 100 quid!

I wouldn’t be without mine, it’s paid for itself many, many times over. If I can use one an untrained monkey overdosing on Haribos can. It’s gotten me out of a good few jams. The best time was when I walked back in to the dealer after abut 5 minutes after collecting a new key, going out to the car, rewatching the how-to vid, programmed the key and walked back in showing them it working. The service chap said their machine wouldn’t have even switched on by then.

The discerning tool. Thumbs Up

ok ok.. i get it! or more importantly, ill get one!

At the risk of cross threading (i have another post about hard suspension..) does anybody know if resetting / calibrating the suspension can cure this issue?

Many thanks guys, great to find another forum with such informative "normal" folks!
