Dilemma......

Apologies, I know this has raised its head many times before but here I go anyway.
I currently drive a D4 2013 SDV6 3.0L.
I do around 8000 miles a year, split around 50/50 between motorway and city driving. I do very little light towing.
Heres my point:-
I am looking to order a D5 HSE for delivery on 1st March 2019.
My huge delima is which engine due to the oil dilution issues which are quite huge it appears. The TDV6 is being phased out and being replaced with the SDV6, however I am unable to gain any information due due to the newness.
The other alternative is the SD4 which has no oil issues, two years between services but doesn’t have the grunt of the 3.0L V6.
Peoples thoughts are appreciated.
Mark

With the current wave of opinion against ICE vehicles I wouldn't buy one.

Likewise EV's, PHEV's etc are all early in their development cycle.

I would hang on to the D4, taking out a decent warranty if necessary, and postpone a decision for at least a couple more years.

I’ve got a 2lt 240 D5 and do a little light towing and it’s perfect. It doesn’t suffer from the problems the 3lt does, which is why I bought it.

If you don't think the 2.0 has 'grunt' then compare it to the D4 3.0 you'll be getting out of .....the 2.0 is considerably more nimble and once you are out of 1st you really wouldn't know it wasn't a larger engine. Very smooth through the 8 speed box 8)

Didn't the 2.0 litre diesel in the Disco Sport have oil dilution issues? Surely LR have sorted it in the 3.0 by now?

Hi Bigcol66,

I think the earlier 2.0L that they put in other vehicles had the problem. The one they put in a D5 is one called SD4, I think LR have dropped the earlier version now.🤔

Be careful with LR and their engine names.

They are often all the same units. The ‘new’ SDV6 in the D5 is the same as the D4 with a few more ponies squeezed out of it. The TDV6 in the D5 is the same engine, with single turbo.

If I was going for a D5, I would probably go for a 2.0l to avoid the oil dilution problems and probably crank issues.

Though the Ingenium engines are not without issues too, oil dilution aside...

There are claims of excessive engine wear on the DS models...though not seen any evidence of it in the D5 yet

Assuming your D4 is low mileage, I'd go along with NJSS.

However, if you want a new D5 and it suits your needs and it sounds as if it does, then get one. If you're concerned about the engine, get rid of it once the 3yr warranty expires Thumbs Up

2.0 is fine in the D5 I've driven one quite a lot, there is a knack to getting it going which I think is why first impressions for D4 owners isn't alway great. Depends what you do with your Disco, I Tow a lot and tried the 2.0 it wasn't powerful enough or my liking, don't think its workhorse in that department and would go for 3.0L.

RDR-That's interesting to hear as I've been impressed by the 2.0L in the D5's I've driven. BUT, I only drove them either on my own or with one passenger. Fully laden or towing and I suspected it wouldn't be so impressive, which you've confirmed. Thumbs Up

Also, the EU6 3.0 SDV6 engines in both of my 2016 D4's have been real gems, so it didn't help going from my Landmark to the 2.0 D5 and back again.

A few of us went to the lunch at the factory and whilst there I asked abput bpth versions.
Was told for normal driving an occasional towing the 2.0 would be best. However for more frequent towing, off road or frequent heavey towing 3.0 all the way. That came from one of the engineers at the factory

As for oil dilution issues, yes it is a problem, early cars are paid for and covered under warranty but later cars at customers expense. However have just been told there is now a software fix out for a limited chassis range but if this proves successful it will go out across the range where there are issues.
