[Wanted] Series 3 gearbox in very good condition |
|
Looking for a very good condition or reconditioned gearbox for Alfred the 109.
Long story short, the original gearbox went bang (I suspect a broken pinion, but second was also jumping out and the syncro worn). I had a spare gearbox that my son liberated from a scrap S3 which I have fitted, only to find that it is extremely noisy in all but 4th (possibly layshaft bearing?). I'm mobile for the moment but realise that the replacement is a ticking time bomb. I was planning to order a rebuild kit and rebuild the original but before I do thought I'd see if anyone was willing to part with one.
I'll also update alfred's thread in the next couple of days.
Thanks in advance.

A brilliant improvement is to fit a Rover 5 speed LT77 or R380 gearbox. This gives a stronger gearbox, synchromesh on all forward gears and an overdrive 5th.

It’s not such a difficult job to rebuild the S3 box, I did one a few months ago. They are very prone to jumping out of gear, especially 1st / 2nd.
The synchro hub does wear out, but the cause of jumping out of gear on the one I did was the selector rods and ball/spring detents were worn.
