Fluid Leak between gearbox and engine
Hi got a slight leak between the gearbox and the engine. The oils looks a light gold colour. Im also getting a slight wobble of the rev counter when accelerating moderate too hard. Its just a slight movement of the rev counter maybe 10 - 20 rpm. Car is driving ok and gear change seem fine.
My question:
Could it be a leaking TC?
Is the ATF in the gearbox the same fluid as in the TC or is it different stuff?
Was thinking of checking the level in the Gearbox and maybe topping it up if necessary.
Thanks,
Ian.

There's an electrical transmission plug on the gearbox that's known to leak.
Other than that I've no idea about it.
I had it replaced whilst I had Disco in getting a gearbox service and the company mentioned it so I had it changed at the same time.

Yes I have heard that these can be a problem, but I think they are on the output end of the gearbox, so would not leak into the bell housing.

Yes ATF and TC are the same fluid pumped around

The overflow from the gearbox when its been overfilled runs to the bell housing and drips from the hole at the bottom. The correct fluid is a light honey colour so that may be it. Check the level in the gearbox but prior to undoing the filler plug make sure engine is running at idle (saves a mess ) as this makes sure all bits are full.

That leak seems to be the patented LR chassis crossmember anti corrosion system, invented by Maurice WIlkes himself and introduced to the market with Series I 88".
I wonder how much effort went into designing the device that creates a precisely metered leakage at the ZF gearbox factory.

Lots, itโs part of the LR design brief.

Thanks Guy's, sounds like I'm not going to have to fork out 1,000s for a rebuild and have a perfectly preserver cross member

Be thankful yours is a conformist. My D4 refuses to leak a drop and is subsequently rusting to pieces ๐

I thought the vented upto the engine bay (behind the RH head)
to prevent water going into the gearbox when in water.
