Heater fan not coming on – vehicle re-start ‘fixes’ it!?

I am sorry for starting another heater fan thread, but I couldn’t find one with the same problem that I am having.

It started this summer, when occasionally the a/c fan did not come on after I started the engine. Now that it is getting colder, it almost never comes on right away. Sometimes I am able to ‘fix’ it by manually cranking the fan up, oftentimes I however have to shut the ignition completely off and re-start the vehicle. Once it is working, it however runs without any further problems, including ‘auto’ mode.

I am aware that the resistor module is often causing trouble, in this case it however appears to be more of a an issue with a control unit.

What are your thoughts? How is the fan actually controlled?

Oliver

First thing try swapping the relay out in the engine bay fuse box. Normally the headlight washer is a good one to swap with (all marked on the fuse cover lid). If that fixes he issue then fit a new relay in place of the one that was originally for the fan.

That even better because they fit a spare relay that isn’t used !

Thank you for your responses.

I am aware that the relay often fails, but didn't think that this would explain the issues I'm having.
Anyways, since this is an easy job I'll try swapping the relay first.

While you at it, check to see if the fan spinns freely.. You never know if any rodents are trying to move in, and found the fan an attractive place to live for the winter..
