Ebay and Gumtree Scams - Disco 3s listed
Gents,
Just thought I'd make you aware the following two adverts have been set up by fraudsters on ebay and Gumtree, both involve 2005 silver Disco 3s HSE and both are priced to look very attractive.
On trying to get hold of the Gumtree seller the phone number is disconnected but I persevered by email only to be told by email (after receiving a text) that the guy worked away (nothing too odd about that), in the Isle of Man... possible "and the car was not available to view but could be sent to my house for me to look at "no risk" provided I put the money in an Escrow account.... hmmm let me have a think about that one... Also refused to supply service history or blanked out copy of the V5C showing reg mark... further claimed to be a fleet manager for BP... I know most of them and he ain't one ! The very poor English in the responses also rang alarm bells
The ebay one is still progressing but has started in the same vein... with a reply by text asking for my email address "to look at pictures of the car"... a text back asking for a convenient time to call and chat about the car has had no response...
It may be that I am overly suspicious and a bit paranoid having been stung by a guy in Glasgow (still has my deposit - now in the hands of my solicitor) but just be careful if buying outside the forum.
Cheers
Nige'I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

I knew I should have got Dark Bluie on eBay after the engine started sounding a “little” rough. This would have more than made up for it.

There must have been something wrong with your instruments, it was never 29°C outside! Richard

Re the temp, tell me about it. I was on the way to the Pyrenees with no AC and it was mid 30s in the car. Sweat was running off me big time, luckily had seat covers.

Just had a response by email..
“Hi there,
Thank you for your interest in my car 2005 Land Rover Discovery 3 2.7 TD V6 HSE is available and the final price is £5,645. I am the registered owner and i have all documents, V5 document present in my name, current MOT certificate and a full service history. This car is in excellent working conditions, looks and runs great. ONLY 75,798 miles. No scratches or dents, no hidden defects. Interior in great condition, non-smoking car. Never been involved in an accident, no problems at all. The reason for selling it is that I've moved with work in Scotland, i'm a pediatric surgeon and I have no use for this one at the moment, so this car has to go.
The car is still in UK at a shipping company www.rkmtransport.co.uk and i can have it shipped to your location (I will pay the shipping) and we will use them as a third party. Also, I have attached you some more pictures with the car to this email.
If you are interested in buying my car, feel free to email me at any time.”
Hmmmmmmmm I think I’ll write back saying I’m in Scotland and we should meet for a coffee... anyone willing to give odds on them agreeing to meet? I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

”no hidden defects”
That’s the give away that it’s a scam.
”pediatric surgeon”
Yeah right. Email back and say you’re in Scotland and, say, a orthopaedic consultant. See what comes back.

It was the “no smoking car”... a diesel that doesn’t smoke! Must be a VW with no emissions
Will email “her” back and have a bit of fun!I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

The response was almost a word for word copy including grammatical errors ("up with which I will not put" W Churchill) copy of the email back from the Gumtree ad... add into this the price, the almost identical photos, the unavailability of the car to be viewed and the option to send your money to a third party who will deliver your car to your house....... hmmmm
Prior to that the very low mileage car for about £2k less than everyone else is selling ones that have done twice the mileage for rings alarm bells immediately...I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!
