Viewing D3/4’s to look out for |
|
Hi all, I have not plaster much as I have been on the look out for a D3/4. I am finally going to take the plunge. Any advice on what to check when going to view them?
I kind of know the obvious like warning lights, blue smoke, mayo on the oil top up cap and (off course) the suspension.
Any top tips would be much appreciated!
Thanks

I bought my D4 two weeks ago and have just spent the entire weekend replacing all four rear wishbones & the upper & lower ball joints, plus drop links, discs, pads & parking brake shoes. A week ago I did front brakes & drop links. So check all of those
To be fair the rear lower wishbones were OK and I chose to do them "while I'm there". The o/s upper failed the MOT and although the n/s didn't it probably should have done as both bushes fell straight out when I took the arm off.
Worn brake discs are very obvious. Parts aren't expensive and they're an easy job, but might be a useful bargaining point.
Uneven tyre wear, likely inner or outer edge, may be "just needs alignment" but similar to the classic "just needs a regas", if the joints are shagged (see above) it'll quickly turn into a much bigger job as you'll never get it dialled in when things are moving about.
If the original floor mats are missing then budget for replacements. I've never found an aftermarket floor mat that matches OEM quality, in any car. Second hand ones come up quite regularly and I'd definitely go for s/h genuine in preference to new copies.

Ref the mats... travall rubber mats and dog guards etc are very good quality IMO.
A set of 4 footwell mats and boot mat will be about £100 new for the lot, and under £300 for dog guard, divider and door. Where new LR mats alone would be £300 plus from dealer and boot accessories over £500 all in.

When i had my D4 the rear upper arms had both gone, I got the upgraded ''RRS'' rear arms to replace them as a direct fit and the difference in handling and ride was unbelievable. They cost me around £600 to buy and have fitted
