Possible new owner about to buy D3
I've moved to Devon and my Jaguar with lowered body kit seems to hit the ground regularly. Possible boat purchase in the offing so thinking about Discovery3. OK now comes the big issue - Land Rover get seriously bad ratings on reliability and if there's one thing that I can't stand in a car is problems. Looking at various forums there does seem to be lots of bad reports. What's the real story? How bad is reliability? Not sure to get a sensible answer but interested in the collective view from you guys.

Reliability: Remember that most of these D3's do alot move than just the school run, and therefore what you read here reflects very good reliability.
Only minor issues to report in 3 years and 2 x D3. Handled dogs, horse box, trailer, caravan, cross euro travels +++++++

Also remember that most of Land Rovers poor reliability scores reflect the older discovery 1&2 and freelander 1 models. The D3 had some glitches with the suspension on some early 2004\05 but 2006MY on has proved as reliable as any other make IMO.

I once went and read postings on other marques forums. (The X5 one comes to mind) . There were more bitches and far fewer than you will find here . The earlier models had some teething issues which have pretty much been sorted.

Had a 2005 model for two and a half years. During that time I had various minor niggles and one major failure when the park brake failed. The car NEVER left me stranded (even drove it to the dealer when the park brake went) so I would say totally reliable and did almost 50,000 miles in it.
Just traded it in for a new one two weeks ago, which I think says everything you need to know.

Yes, I had read lots of bad reports and filled myself with doubts but I took the plundge and don't regret it. So far three weeks and 650 km of problem free joy!

D3 Reliability
My first D3 did'nt miss a heart beat, and 30,000 miles.
My second D3 had an engine fault which cured it's self, 22,000 miles later and I can say that its a pleasure to drive every mile it eats up.
Also you can tastefully add extras, ie spots, alloys, a bar, etc.
I would quite happily go and buy another D3 tomorrow
My parents in law live in Devon and when I visit, I would'nt go in any other vehicle.

Thanks for the input - at least I'm getting some encouraging news. You wouldn't be biased now would you? (only kidding). I seem to find a few parking brake problems reported (including on here) and suspension. I also notice a poll re the parking brake issues that seem to need a dealer to fix when it happens, am I correct in this assumption?
I'd like to do some fun off road when I do get one (but nothing too difficult). what are the rules about finding places to go off road? (in addition to the events forum here)
