Heated Windscreen - Drivers side issue

Hi all,

As it's getting colder I notice that the drivers side of the windscreen takes a lot longer than the passenger side to heat up and clear. The passenger is a couple of minutes but the drivers is probably about twice as long.

The screen is relatively new after having it replaced due to a crack. It is Pilkington branded OptiKool glass as I demanded from AutoWindscreens.

I've checked the spade connectors at the A-pillar and all seems ok, the fuses seem good and not corroded. Does anyone know where the earthing point is?

Thanks,

Ian

well if you measure the voltage drop between the earth spade connector and cigar lighter ground (with heater/engine on).

If it's less than 0.5V its not a grounding issue.

If you have the passenger pilar off you could measure the voltage difference between the passenger and drivers side. (with screen on)

either between both + connectors.
or with respect to ground, in turn

That should tell you if its related to the car and fixable or the screen

Yeah that's what I was thinking. There was over a volt difference between the ground side of the elements so I think it is a suspect ground. To save tracing it I've added a new ground on the A-pillar itself with a ring terminal and drilled and tapped a hole.

Let's see how it works in the morning Smile

Just to update, with this mornings ice I could actually test it.

The result... Yes it was a bad earth and the new earth works wonders clearing slightly faster than the passenger side now!
