Spare tyre winch service/prep/gotchas etc?
Hi,
Since owning the cat for 3+ years I have never dropped the spare. If I was to carry out some maintenance e.g. check, lube, thoroughly check spare etc what do I need to look out for e.g.
Is the which almost guaranteed to be seized?
If its bust, can I make the car drivable, e.g. can I remove the spare and manually lift the tray and secure.
Anything else I need to know to go into the job informed and ready?
Thanks.Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

Never pull the winch cable in without a wheel on the end, guaranteed to jam it up.
Never pull the winch cable in without a wheel (or substantial tension) on the end
I have, on a number of occasions, wound the cable in without a wheel on the end, no problems as long as you tension the cable throughout the wind.
I would recommend cleaning the cable every time it is extended, I've always used an oily rag, and also cleaning the winch with a brush & vacuum cleaner whilst dry & then spraying with WD40 to get rid of any water. Oiling in my experience merely helps dust to stick! YMMV !
Also if you haven't got one you should fit Uncle Ray's protector.

I'm not sure maintenance is a good idea on them. Could well result in replacement required.
You could spray some oil about

Fairly cheap and easy to replace anyway I did one the other day. So no need to panic.

Thanks for those tips, i get the idea of making sure it has tension before winding in (or having the wheel on).
If it does need replacement though, can I make it drivable while I get the bits ordered. I hate to be car less if it got jammed. Im not to worried about fixing it myself, just the car being out of action while im waiting for parts.Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

well you would need to put the spare wheel in the boot.
and tie the cable up under the car to stop it dragging along. (or well just undo the 3? bolts)
