Centre ashtray won't close
Hi - for some reason the centre ashtray (between the two power outlets will no longer click closed. It's very annoying. I can't see anything wrong with the ashtray itself but also can't see how the retracting unit itself comes off.
Any ideas? Is this part replaceable?

Easiest way is to remove the spring from the back, you need to take the centre console and the trim off from around the radio first to remove the panel.
Pete.IID, webasto software and workshop facility's available.

Mine did that. It was the spring (which is like a scroll) had come off, and was stuck behind the ashtray stopping it going fully back.

Mine stopped closing on Saturday morning, so I'm planning an adventure into the center console shortly.

Mine was stuck as well because of the retracting system spring broken.
I was lucky I could manage to take it out with tweezers.
Now it works as expected: no auto function of course.
I don't smoke, so I don't use it so often and I prefer manual operation.
First of all I didn't have to work too much about the cluster and so I didn't have the opportunity to break something.
Cheers
Gianni

I'm treating it as an opportunity to sort the flap covering the lighter which has been stuck closed since I bought the car.

Just replaced this on mine as the ashtray was stuck shut and the lighter cover was stuck open.
1. remove the H trim pull from bottom
2. remove heater controls
3. (mines an auto) pull gear lever knob off
4. unscrew center console screw under brake leaver and pen/coin tray then pull up if you are careful this can be moved out of the way without disconecting wires
5. lift tray under ashtray unscrew ashtray then it out
Took me around 20mins to remove and replace with new couldn't fix mine

Thanks for this summary. I did the same myself last evening and it all went quite painlessly. I had no idea how to re-fit the return spring, so I removed it and made the ashtray "manual" by sandwiching a thin layer of blu tak between the bottom of the tray and the floor of its carrier. A fair amount of work for a non-smoker, but I have got my locking wheel nut key storage back now!

PS, when I asked my local dealer how to fix this, I was told that 3 hours labour would be involved.

I think that must include tea breaks or time to search for any clips they lose

If your happy with a push pull there is no need to take out the centre console if its the spring stopping it closing. Just pull the ashtray completely out then pull the holder out all way. Then push the runner down so it pops out and out the way.
Then orientate the spring with a magnetic tip flathead screwdriver so it's horizontal and the tips end is facing you pointing upwards. This takes about 2-3 minutes bit fiddly but once you have done that use nose pliers to grab the end and pull.
It will unravel to about 2-3" then quickly grab that spring with your other hand and yank. I simply refuse to take a centre console/dash apart for a mere bloody spring which i could see will unravel.
