I'm even less surprised by the BBC's poor use of language:

Perhaps the grand-mother so named her child as it had hairy feet. A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

Anyway... who gave a toss about the child's gender until it's publicity seeking excuses for parents flagged up their stupidity? The kid should sue them for invasion of privacy. I reckon social services should have a word. .

Ridiculous. i'm no English language wizard, but this application is clearly wrong. They/them are plural terms. Even if he cannot work out if he's male or female - there's still only one of him!
And it's quite simple to work out - just look in your pants.
just because people don't feel like they are male or female doesn't have any bearing on whether they are or not. It's a biological term. Kev
