Fuel flap would not open (2008 Disco 3, HSE) |
|
During a trip down through France I was running low on fuel and called into a service area to fill up. Tried to open the filler flap and it would not open, it was as if it was locked. Moved the car away from the pumps and checked Fuse F50 (10Amp for Filler Flap)...it was fine and not blown.
Being late in the day I resorted to desperate measures which involved taking a large screwdriver and forcing the flap and latch open, next move, in order to stop the loose flap swinging to & fro was touse the screwdriver to prise the flap hinge from the filler housing.
Great stuff...I can at least fill up when needed.
I suspect the flap release actuator/cable assembly had failed and have since bought an actuator/cable assembly and a fuel filler housing complete with flap, I will change the flap for my original as it is a different colour. These parts I will fit when we get back to the UK in a couple of weeks or so.
Has anyone on here either had the same problem or can advise the procedure for removing/refitting the filler flap housing to the body. I am aware that the lower "C" panel (Loadspace plastic side panel) has to be removed to access the actuator but I cannot see from the outside of the car how the plastic filler housing is secured.
Look forward to any advice.

I think there are 2 quick fixes
1. Press the lock button 3 times or so on the key. and an unlock if that hasn't worked.
2. pull the trim away in the boot, and pull the lock cable out. Certainly easy on RRS. Much easier than doing external damage.

Desperate times need desperate measures, especially when there is no mention of the issue in the handbook and all (The few) LR dealers are closed on a Saturday plus it's raining cats & dogs !!
The damage is done, now back to my second question.....How do I remove the plastic fuel filler housing from the body (How is it fixed ?)
Cheers guys

Hindsight is 20/20 but you could have just used the manual emergency release mechanism inside the right hand side box in the rear of the vehicle ๐

Would have done if there was information in the handbook..
When it's pouring down torrential rain and you are down to 65 miles left in the tank, you don't think of posting a problem on the forum and awaiting an instant reply.
By the way, after my first action-identify and check the fuel flap release fuse, I did look in the toolkit cubby box in the loadspace but could not see an emergency, separate manual release similar to what was there on my previous Range Rover.
I have since read the owner manual from cover to cover in case I missed something, what did I find.........Nothing !!!

Happened again today
Fortunately I had about 160 miles worth of fuel left and was local.
Came home, looked at my post from last year and tried the five clicks method and it worked
After the last episode, I replaced the fuel flap housing and latch assembly, also fitted a new actuator as the locking peg had broken and wouldn't engage with the flap.
I think all Disco 3 owners should take note of this intermittent problem and the possible fix.
