If an upgrade is needed, and it's chargeable and probably in any case, it's better to go 3rd party.
What I mean by that is that the JLR SatNav is pretty , and you would get better functionality & value for money, with an app on a smartphone or a dedicated SatNav.
I have a Garmin SatNav, there's a wide range available:-
and they can be bought a very good prices from Tesco, Currys, Argos etc..
I also use an app on my smartphone when in areas for which I haven't bought a map - like driving from Fernandina Beach is on Amelia Island in FL to Alpharetta GA, when Google Maps proved to be 100%.

I'm not sure everyone would regard 3rd part as 'better'. Some like the convenience of a built-in device that does not require mounts, charging cables or removal and refitting on each journey in an effort to reduce theft. The cost of maps is less than a couple of tanks of fuel or about the price of 1 tyre or a fraction of one year of road tax.

I like having a built in sat nav but my tom tom is far superior to the land rover one and it did cost a lot less than an update from land rover Discovery 3 se gone

Ha Ha, your correct Robbie, the version number is not in any of the settings.
So here is my predicament, it's £169 for the upgrade from JLR on USB which also needs qualifying to the VIN of the vehicle.
I have no problem paying that for the convenience of a built in system, but my main dealer says I have the latest version!!!. so in theory I could buy the 2017 release off JLR but I might already have it.
So does anyone know how I can find out???

Cost me £95 to go from 2013 to 2017 maps, plus a few hours of boredom loading them.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

I've got the MY10 inbuilt sat-nav which needs taken to a dealer for an upgrade.
Does anyone know of a replacement screen/system which would do the same job (phone, music, sat-nav, 4x4 etc) but which could have the maps updated more easily? Or am I looking at a trade-in to a more recent D4 to achieve that (which won't happen anytime soon - i.e. 3 years+)?
I do not want wires and cables trailing everywhere - I'm prepared to put up with my historic sat nav if the only option is something dash-mounted.2014 - D4 2010 HSE Nara Bronze

1998 - Rover 25 Red
at a cost of c. £13 has worked perfectly with my SG Note 4 & SG S7 Edge without any cables at all for journeys up to 3 or 4 hours provided the 'phone is fairly fully charged at start.
This includes using the 'phone, running Google Maps & Pocket GPS speed Camera apps simultaneously - YMMV.
