Key-fob ... time to slim down ?

My key-fobs are the Samsonite sized ones and are starting to fall apart.

I've read the threads regarding failure to ever get the covers to stick properly back in place, so I'm going to replace the whole casing.

I'd like to go the route of the newer, slimmer, pocket-friendly ones but looking on Fleabay it's hard to spot
1. decent ones
2. ones which include the chrome piece
3. ones which aren't just a slip-over cover for existing cases.

has anyone done it recently and can recommend a reasonable seller ?

TIA
 .

I got mine (plastic & chrome ones for 63 plate D4) from Matford Land Rover on E-Bay £13.50 each for genuine ones. Easy to fit and have put them in a silicone cover to protect them.

I can recommend RRUK. Quick and efficient for my 2011 D4.

I did the opposite.

I like the "Sansonite" model much more, so on my XXV I replaced both cases with the big one (and silicone cover)

Part number LR059382 and LR050788 you need one of each, easy to do board drops onto 2 plastic pegs that you just flatten down with solder iron to keep it all in place, Thumbs Up

ok ... electronics swapped over and it all functions.

is there a way to remove the keyblade from the old fob without breaking the metal section it sits in ?

On mine I had a little pin to push in that then let the blade fall out.

no pin on mine BUT ... whilst i moved the keyblade about to look for one, it slid out when in the "almost closed" position.

Very Happy

ok ... should've planned piccies better but here's a few ...

Between these two YouTube vids, you'll see what needs doing. My old case did not want to come apart, so 2nd vid covered that. also inspired me that if these two muppets can do it, I was going to be fine
Rolling with laughter

PCB needs a bit of filing ... examples on YouTube make it look more onerous than it. just needed to take a couple of mm off the slanted corner (next time, I won't use a black screwdriver to point to location on black plastic Laughing ... photoshop to the rescue)

Need to remove some of the location lugs in the bottom of the new fob ... the ones in the area marked where the ones I did. HOWEVER ... I also had to re-shape the spring lever that holds the battery in place. (more about that in a bit)

And it all just clips together like this ... just took a bit more force than expected.

So ... it looks nice ( IMHO ) and it's nice and small. all the buttons work as they should.

Downside ?

needs a bit of a press to get the buttons to work, although that may improve with use.

keyblade transferred ok ... but it's just clipped in. doesn't swing out when cover is removed. Given that's only going to be an issue when i have to use it in anger and that may never happen ... is it really a problem ?

Battery changing needs the whole case pulling apart ... not as neat as the method with the old fob and, given the way it clips together, it may cause damage to the fob if/when I have to do it.

Total cost ... £8.99, and it came with a new battery too. (although I re-used the one I had.) So even if it doesn't stand the test of time, I can do this a few dozen times before I approach the cost of having to get a new key from JLR. Very Happy

I did mine 18 months ago and it’s still as good as new.

If you have to use the blade, did you know the end fits back into the fob so you can get the leverage to turn it?

Also, if you need to trim or adjust the case a soldering iron works a treat. My clip for the key blade fell off as the plastic riveted affair was crap. I reformed the head with the clip in place and it’s still going strong.

Inspired by Dean (Hardware17), I bought a shell from LR (via eBay), and did my own transplant. Apart from finding it hard to open the old key, it was an easy process. Five mins of filing to get the PCB to fit the new shell, and tah-dah, the old key was gone!!

Not going to bother with changing the spare key though!

Thanks Dean!!

ok ... 3 months in so time I fed-back on the fob.

Used one from here on eBay

Still looks smart BUT the "flexible" areas of the fob are too stiff, so much so I often have to use two hands to get enough pressure to lock/unlock. Granted, my finger/thumb joints are not good but it's still IMHO excessive pressure required to operate it ... and until I packed the silver key-cover with blu-tak, I was frequently dislodging that whilst pressing the buttons.

Key-fob ... time to slim down ?

.... but it could be worse!

You'd need a 'manbag' for this one!
