steering free play

Hi all

I have a d3 that has about 1.25inc of free play at the steering wheel.
I checked all the components and the loose is at the steering gear itself.
Is there a way of setting the steering gear similar to the way one can set the steering box on a D2?

thanks

No adjustments other than to make it stiffer to turn, I’ve got about 20mm and I’ve changed track rod ends, lower column and the rack also the steering rods on the end of the rack
Metal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)
LR door puddle projectors (10 mins)
Tinted Bonnet wind deflector (10 mins)
All Intercooler pipes and Tbolts (2hrs)
3 injectors replaced so far (30mins)
Sunroof drain pipes both sides 2.5 hrs)
Rear discs, shoes, pads, callipers, flexi hoses, rigid brake line, n/s upper hub carrier bush and rear n/s upper arm (13hrs over 2 days)

It cannot be..... if you've changed all this including the rack then you should be fine...… my free play is in the rack itself and I am asking whether there is an adjustment that can be done to the rack like a steering box on a d2 or defender is adjusted?

thanks
Josef

I know what your asking, I’ve asked the manufacturer of the rack and he says nothing to take up the backlash of the pinion gear Banging Head

I’ve just took mine to a steering specialist and he took one look where the lower column meet the input shaft to the rack and said it’s the lower shaft bolt not tight enough so he tightened it up but it stripped Big Cry
I got a higher tensile bolt and nut to re do it and still no good Banging Head

I bit the bullet and got another lower shaft genuine as the other was new but britpart

Fitted along with the new bolt 8mmx35mm and washer with a nylock nut just for good measure it’s cured it no more free play Thumbs Up
