Autobox oil level-check and top up
How do you do this folks.
Is it as simple as undoing the fill plug on the side of the plastic casing and squirting the expensive oil in until it runs out- where does the 9 litres go?. The casing doesnt look nearly that capacity-presumably all the pipes and cooler.
Not planning on doing the filter.
Lots of threads on right temperature etc- how critical?
Standing by for quality advice!
If I could figure out how to upload a picture I would have-did manage to get one in my album though-the only one that is there. So if you are keen hopefully you can see it there.

Drained the oil on auto box at weekend, did not bother with filter, simply undid the filler plug to check it would undo ok, then undid the drain plug, make sure you have new washer for drain plug. Approx 4 litres comes out like this so obviously you only need 4 litres back in, if fluid came out when you first undid the fill plug that is.
I left the engine to cool for approx 1 hour after getting home, this seemed about right for temp.
I used a short length of clear 12mm tube and a funnel, best to have two people if you don't have a pump, just pass tube through wheel arch.
You will get about 2 litres in before needing to start engine and passing through gears to get the other 2 litres in.
I am no expert so this is simply what I did, however no problems since and have now covered another 500 miles.
Did the linkage whilst I was under.
People recommend double flush in order to mix the old oil up and end up with a greater percentage of new oil in,, if I keep the car I will repeat again but probably change filter as well next time.
Just make sure you use the right oil.
I found the drain plug very fragile looking so replaced with new circa £3.
If looking to check levels:
- get vehicle onto level ground i.e garage floor
- turn on engine leave running in neutral
- open fill plug and check level and clarity of oil, original oil is amber colour
- change/ top up oil as required.
