Any electronics experts? viability of touchscreen mod? |
|
Hello all.
So my 2011 Discovery 3 HSE has the worst driver interface I have ever seen. Difficult to read due to poor layout and a text heavy interface and the response of the touchscreen is abysmal.
Ideally i would like to retain the 4x4 info and the ability to access the settings menu for setting the clock etc along with having the DAB function.
However I would love to be able to use Android apps, nav and customisation too.
I also have one of those dongles that allows you to have Apple CarPlay on an android screen.
Idealy i would like to replace the lcd panel with a slightly higher res, higher contrast, brighter panel that supports capacitive touch.
Into this I would like two feeds.
An android box running apps, Nav, and CarPlay. - HDMI out for video and USB in for touch.
The OEM headhunt feed. - Would need an LVDS to HDMI adapter for video and something for the touch.
Video could be handled by.....
HDMI switch?
The LCD driver board and using both HDMI and DVI as selectable inputs?
Touch is a bit of a puzzle. I know that mimics does a passthrough for touch with two streams to one (sadly it's only compatible with the mimics system).
Is it possible to mix Capacitive and Resistive with an adapter?
Is it possible to have a switcher? Maybe by wiring them as a y split but only powering the selected channel?
If even possible how would it handle witching video source and touch source together?
How would it handle auto switching to reverse cam and then back to previously active source?
Arduino?
Raspberry clone?
Its all pie in the sky at the moment. I know the individual components would work but have no knowledge other than practical reasoning of how it would interface.
I realise that there is the Australian mod interface that adds Android for £600 plus but you are still stuck with the poor LCD, touch interface and old version of Android.
If the above were possible I would rather invest in that! (And I already have most of the components)
So over to you. I know there are some Mod geniuses on this forum, perhaps many minds approaching from different directions and with differing electronics specialities can hash out a solution?
If not it has been fun fantasising!!
Worst case I stick to my iPhone in a cradle.

by far the easiest way to do what you want is to replace the screen with an android table or ipad mini. you could then route the sound thru the head unit and there are apps to make it car friendly from a user interface perspective.
There is a whole carPC scene using raspberrypis but i dont know much detail.
I want to do something similar, i'm looking at android head units but they seem abit pricey.

A number of posters have used a variety of off the shelf, mostly Chinese, after market double din units and had varying degrees of success.
Be warned however, I don't think anybody, manufacturers or modders, have managed to isolate the 4x4 info and re-use it in their install. Mods:
Front Fogs + Halos
FBH Remote Control
The 1st Ever RRS Modded Grill
Garmin Nuvi + D4 Surround + Reversing Camera.
D4 Steering Wheel.
Rear Boot Spoiler.
Twin Brake Lights.
Wing Mirror Indicator Repeaters.
Long Roof Rails
Make your own Narpy grill thread
I'm not scared, I'm outta here.

My initial thoughts were to add a tablet but you lose too much functionality from the head unit itself. i them tried to work out a clever system that would mount the tablet infront of the main unit with the ability to raise it to view both screens if necessary.
Needless to day still not got anywhere with any of my fantasy systems.
Almost bought the Australian system whilst out there last month but luggage weight restrictions and getting delivery sorted meant it didnt happen.
Have just started looking at Xcarlinks offering. Seems to be the same system?
Any experience?
In my head it must be possible to take the signal sent to the lcd of the headunit and route it as an external input to a replacement screen and the same with the touchscreen signal. But if I know how.
For now I make do with the phone in a cradle and bluetooth disconnected due to abysmal difference in volume levels between headunit and aux / BT input.
