Cannabis

There are moves afoot with some MP's (including David Lammy) to legalise cannabis. He says he wants to take back control from the drug dealers by legalising it. For years successive governments have taxed 'smoking' to the hilt to try to prevent the spread of cancer but now it seems to be the right thing is to legalise it.

The NHS website says the following about smoking cannabis:
Quote:
Cannabis can be harmful to your lungs

People who smoke cannabis regularly are more likely to have bronchitis (where the lining of your lungs gets irritated and inflamed).

Like tobacco smoke, cannabis smoke contains cancer-causing chemicals, but it's not clear whether this raises your risk of cancer.

If you mix cannabis with tobacco to smoke it, you risk getting tobacco-related lung diseases, such as lung cancer and chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD).

So is the whole world going mad or is it just politicians?

Tobacco is harmful. Legalise tobacco. Tax tobacco.
Cannabis is harmful. Legailse cannabis. Tax cannabis.

How is that not consistent?

It's not a traditional conservative Conservative position, however.

Banning both, along with alcohol, would be a proper position. But that's not very voter friendly.

Plenty of big business, like FMCG, “wellness” and pharma - are salivating at the thought of being able to use legalized cannabis in various forms in their products. Long term, I don’t think smoking will be “the thing” for the masses. It seems CBD oils in food products, for example, would be one group.. Take a look at some of the states where it’s legalized in the US and then in Canada. Also, it’ll provide tax money and governments usually don’t say no to such things.

The people toking it up will eventually be a minority.

I would (almost) bet that if USA would legalize it on federal level the western world would follow.

Right now it’s still kind of a gray area still but as the US government is very much pro business (and big business lobbies government very much) there are common interests. Currently it’s difficult for the growers and sellers to stash all the cash they get since banks are vary of getting in trouble with federal authorities (in states where it is legal).

Cannabis as a "recreational" drug is a gateway drug, meaning in the weak willed, it leads on to harder stuff. It's continued heavy use also leads to mental health problems such as paranoia. However, opiates taken "recreationally" are far worse for the individual. But there are good medicinal uses for them.

I'm sure there's a place for cannabis products in medicine and for that reason, I see no problem with it being correctly prescribed. But not sure you should be able to go up to the tobacco counter in Morrisons and be able to buy a packet of 20 spliffs. Even if they are behind a big sliding door.

The above doesn’t seem to be supported by recent US Government studies, though. For example:

Nkansah-Amankra, S., & Minelli, M. (2016). "Gateway hypothesis" and early drug use: Additional findings from tracking a population-based sample of adolescents to adulthood. Preventive medicine reports, 4, 134–141. doi:10.1016/j.pmedr.2016.05.003
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4929049/

An older study of children in New Zealand concludes the opposite.

Fergusson, D. M., Boden, J. M. and Horwood, L. J. (2006), Cannabis use and other illicit drug use: testing the cannabis gateway hypothesis. Addiction, 101: 556-569. doi:10.1111/j.1360-0443.2005.01322.x
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16548935

Both have plenty of citations so take your pick Mr. Green

If that really was true then Holland would be seriously full of smackheads. Maybe it is? I didn't notice any while I was sitting outside Bulldog last week testing the local 'produce' Smile

Either ban alcohol, cigs as well or let peps pollute themselves with whatever they like.

As I and no one in the family indulge in these things, so I couldn’t care less tbh.
