My D4 just died! Complete black out but kept driving?!
Hey guys, any info greatly appreciated....
Today, had message up saying Battery Charging Fault (alternator I guess...), but as I was driving and doing the kiddy pick up run, I carried on...not turning the engine off at separate destinations! Then...warning after warning came up, as my D4 started to shut itself down...no instruments, media, turn signals, even gearbox control went - however, the lights came on and it still drove, getting me and my two baby daughters home. THEN, once back in PARK, would not go into any other gear...so turned engine off...DEAD. Came back to life a couple of minutes later to tell me I had a low battery and start the engine...but then died again, been dead ever since.
I'm HOPING, this is just an alternator problem?
Any info appreciated.....

Identical symptoms when mine went luckily battery survived it. I bought a replacement then called the AA a few days later saying it had broken down, they diagnosed as I suspected the alternator which guess what I just happened to have a spare and the fitted it on my drive as I had home start luckily. Fairly simple job and took him about 2 hours.IID Tool

Wish I'd known to do this when it happened to me a few years back. Cost me about a grand at the nearest main dealer. We were at the opposite end of the country to home between Xmas and NY so claiming the rock><hard place defence.VR6 > 330D Touring > D3 HSE > !?XC90?!
