NZ car rental suggestion pls

Sorting out re-jigging the tail end of our little jolly in the light of the Aussie bush fires and it looks like NZ has drawn the short straw. Shocked Shocked

Now we had car hire sorted in Aus, about A$60/£32 a day for a mid sized car from Thrifty with option boxes ticked for zero excess, extra recovery and the like. From a top(ish) tier company in NZ those prices double!! To go second tier for the same outlay we’re talking about older cars, some saying from 2004 so really old cars!

Anyone either in NZ or having visited have any recommendations for car rental? We’re not looking at SUVs, 4x4s or campers, just a small to midsized car that doesn’t date back to the Old Testament.

TIA

Many thanks. Thumbs Up Re islands, both, which is where it gets complicated as some rental companies don’t want to take a car from the N & drop it off in the S. At the mo we’re looking to arrive in Wellington, spend a couple of weeks up there then down to the South, & fly back to Sydney. Well that’s the plan. Thumbs Up

New Zealand 2011 Discovery 4 5.0 V8 HSE Auto BournvilleDiscovery 4

Hi Del,

Sorry only just seen this as we have just got back from our own holiday to Scotland!

There are companies that will let you take your car on the ferry, but it is generally much cheaper to just change cars.

As for rates, try acerentalcars.co.nz or https://www.jucy.com/nz/en - both have good rates.

If you make it to Dunedin, make sure you give me a yell and I will buy the coffee!
 King of the typo.

MY11 D4 5.0 V8, Bournville, lots of goodies!

Now departed: '85 RR Vogue, '94 D1, '95 D1, '70 SIIA, '97 D1, '04 D2a. All V8, except for the SIIA - but that drank as much petrol anyway!

I like the EL Cheapo option on their website Laughing

United Kingdom 2016 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 HSE Lux Auto Waitomo GreyDiscovery 4

I have just booked with Apex rental pick up in Queenstown drop off in Auckland. 25 days hire of a RAV4 4WD (it was cheaper than a current model 2WD) with ferry For car and two passengers and zeroed all excess for $1740 about £850. Collecting end of January.

There were a few cheaper deals before Xmas but we had booked a full sized motorhome for the period originally and the got an email saying there is a problem with the gas hot water systems on some motorhomes requiring the systems to be isolated. They would tell us the day of collecting if ours was affected. No reduction or upgrade offered so we cancelled and got our money back and now airb&b and hotel for the trip.

Not good customer service for Maui motorhomes but we booked via Trailfinders and they sorted the refund.

We had same issue with Maui but didn’t affect us as we were using camp sites, all with amenities & not wild camping. Got them to throw in in the ‘return empty’ pack meaning not having to replace gas or fuel, approx $160 Aus which was better than nothing

Sorry for being slow to get back on this but it’s a bit moot now as we’ve decided that we’re going to stay in Aus and instead of 6 weeks in SA/VIC/NSW we’re going to split that time between Tasmania and prob Queensland. We’ll fly from Hobart to Sydney then decide which way to go. Presently a tad worried re our time in WA as a couple of major roads are presently closed, it’s going to be interesting keeping on top of what’s going on. Sad

So the Sheep Shagging lessons that are a prerequisite to go to NZ will not be needed now Laughing
