Thought the 3L D4 was different from the 2.7 in that the rear belt is now timed to the HPFP and consequently much more difficult, has anyone had this done? Disco_Mikey have you any more info on this one? 8)

I thought from something I had read on here previously it was a body off job for the D4, but I could be wrong (and usually am!).Andy

I had heard it was body off but that was when they first came out, they might have bred a new breed of technicians with triple jointed skinny hands & arms.

What's different on a D4 at the back of the engine? is it just the HP fuel pump belt that's harder to get to?
Yes the rear belt on the D4 is timed and also harder to get to, LR have decided to put the egr cooling pipe right across the center of the rear belt cover as well..

^^^ I had a look at a high mileage D4 HSE which was relatively 'cheap' and asked about the belts. The 'small' dealer said the garage next door to him would do them 'no problems' as they have done several D3s and 'they're the same' Needless to say I wasn't impressed and didn't buy, if D_M Flack etc have doubts and looks like a body off job then you have to respect that especially with their level of expertise and 'work around' fixes

I live in hope, although from the following comments that would now seem misplaced.
On the plus side, I might try Milton Keynes Audi, as I believe they are now well versed in working in confined spaces Andy

On a D3 at least some of the dealers (all of them that I phoned for getting mine done said the same) weren't replacing the rear belts as standard, if it breaks you just stop it doesn't damage the engine, and how many have we actually heard of breaking?
With that in mind, if its a body off, is it worth leaving until they break or cause issues?Joined the BMWX5 45e group
