Engine not running well after preheating

Good morning all,

I have a problem with my Webasto or Disco

I installed an Altox case to warm the engine in the morning before I start. But when I do it heated 30 minutes. I get in the car to start the engine and it starts direct but not running well and impossible to accelerate. After 30s to 1m it turns normally.

If I start without having put the webasto the auto start direct and normally. So the glow plug is ok

The problem comes as well at 4 ° as -2 °

I hope you will understand because I translate from French.

You will most likely need to get the codes read to make sure there are no errors stored.

I have had engine pre heaters on several cars now and when used in cold weather the diesel engines always sound harsh as the ecu seems to be trying to work out whats going on as although the engine coolant is warm it is still fuelling for a cold engine, after about 30 to 60 seconds I don not notice the harshness anymore.
I suppose as the warm coolant has been pumped to all corners of the engine and the ecu is now happy?

I have even had the same effect on a petrol v8, it would start okay but be all fluffy on the throttle pedal for several hundred metres then clear.

I have no fault code. when I heated it up I see the needle is at 90 ° and it does not start well

i'm 99% sure there is an old thread on this subject ... but I think lynalldiscovery has summed it up.

Is this the issue where some folks modify the resistance of the sensor ?

I have this same issue sometimes... Confused
My fix is to put the keys in the ignition, turn on the ignition until fuel pump is running.
Leave until fuel pump cuts out...or for 5 or so seconds...
Then start the engine....seems to start fine every time and run normal.

Correct. The ECU reads the oil, coolant and ambient temp. It then decides what fuel is required for the current environment. A warm coolant and cold oil will make the engine lumpy until they balance out.

The oil and coolant temp should be within 10degs of each other.

ok ... looks like I managed to merge (in my head at least) two different issues.

The "resistor fix" https://disco4.com/forum/disco-3-not-start...g+resistor doesn't really link with the webasto issues.

there are lots ( and I do mean LOTS ) of threads that come up if you search "lumpy running" ... if you look for ones started in colder months, you will find lots that match with OvalAutos' and lynalldiscovery's shorter explanations.
