FBH got me stumped - I know I know... |

Promise I've searched thoroughly on the topic, but am still at a loss.
Issue is my FBH hasn't fired up since last winter, at least, despite having had plenty of occasions to do so.
I do know it to be working. My local indie ran diagnostics on it last week, said it ran and is getting fuel etc. He fired it up for me this morning using the run test through the ODB port. Instantly gave a nice cloud of smoke.
But it won't fire when conditions should call for it or when I call my remote GSM per the mod detailed on this site. When I hit the flame button on the Webasto connected to my remote gsm unit, I hear a fan for about a minute or so from the fbh, but it doesn't ignite this way. The fan stops after a while and there's no smoke or heat out of the exhaust.
Any suggestions? Could it be locked out perhaps and the indie hasn't unlocked it. Would it perform the run test under diagnostics though if it wasn't unlocked?
Anything else I can try before resorting to removing it to inspect more closely and perhaps decoke?
All suggestions no matter how glib will be taken in the spirit of learning. VR6 > 330D Touring > D3 HSE > !?XC90?!

How much fuel do you have in the tank? The FBH is disabled when there is low fuel level (well before the light comes on).

Have tested it with about half a tank of fuel, on both the GSM remote, webasto flame button and when outside temp was -1. VR6 > 330D Touring > D3 HSE > !?XC90?!

If the mech got the fbh to fire then a decoke should in theory not be needed.
I have just fixed a webasto hl18 on a boat and it would do the same as yours, attempt to start then more often than not fail and go into the shutdown sequence, in the end it was a piece of felt that had fell aprt, new felt and away she went everytime, maybe worth a look at the arts diagram, D3 fbh might be totally different as the boat one is from 1993.
Might be worth removing al the gsm/timer stuff and seeing if it will work as per normal?
Just looked at thermotop spare parts list and the burner cartridge is a one piece unit, whereas the hl18 came apart, I am not saying this is your issue, but at the price they want a 2nd hand unit might be the cheapest fix.

Thanks darrind. Might try and find someone nearby able to plug in theirs. Might be more the IID can do than or tell us than my garage's diagnostic tool.
lynalldiscovery, this was what I was hoping to avoid and I've just passed up on Searaider's since mine should work and he has other's interested. I might try the forum loom with the webasto software, though I'd rather not try to find a way through the bulkhead to tap into the OBD port. The webasto test software is probably the most useful though.
Anyone done this and recommend how to get through the bulkhead to join into the diagnostic port? VR6 > 330D Touring > D3 HSE > !?XC90?!

If you have no diag tool the icarsoft 930 for 100 quid is very good, not iid good but then as it is 1/4 of the price you cannot expect it to be.
It will read all codes in all systems on the D3 same as the iid, but it will not programme/modify/calibrate etc as the iid can, but is still a very useful tool.
It was the first thing I bought to clearmy fbh codes and it was worth the 100 quid for that one job alone as the fbh has worked perfectly for the last 5 years.

Yes I think for the few quid, cut fingers and bit of time the webasto software install will cost me it's the best choice. VR6 > 330D Touring > D3 HSE > !?XC90?!

Can i also suggest you check your battery voltage.
i had similar issues last year and found my new Halfords battery was faulty and only getting to 12.1V after long runs.
New battery fitted and FBH now behaving. D1 3Door (White) Long gone
D1 3 Door (Red) Long gone
D2 5 Door (Charleston Green) Long gone
D4 HSE (Black)

Thanks for the point. Coincidentally enough it went flat last week after a few nights of negative temperatures. It has been misbehaving for some time though. Won't hurt to confirm though. I suppose it would have plenty of power to fire up when triggered by the diagnostics with the engine already running. I've bought another Ctek 5 again after the last one went missing from the car after leaving it unlocked overnight. VR6 > 330D Touring > D3 HSE > !?XC90?!
