Low Coolant level
Hi All,
The low coolant warning came up in the middle of a 200mes drive. The temp gauge on the dash was normal and when I looked the coolant tank it was almost full to the top. I could not find any leak so we limped home.
This morning I checked the tank and this is what I had the the coolant tank. The warning has also disappeared. Any ideas?
TIA.

I think the coolant level sensor in the tank is prone to slowly fail. I’ve got the same on mine, warning light has been going on and off for a month or so with no other problems. I’ve brought a new expansion tank to fit when I get time which should fix it.

Difficult to say to be honest, looks the same as mine. It’s quite an easy job with lots of how to videos on YouTube

Hi,
Had exactly same problem, sensor fails - bought an after market new tank with sensor fitted, replaced old tank and now all works perfectly - one word of caution, have plenty of replacement coolant available to refill, I syphoned off nearly all that was in the old tank but still lost quite a bit when removing hoses before I could 'plug' them. Video I watched said to clamp off hoses but to be honest mine seemed too stiff to squeeze shut so simply plugged the bottom hose (had plenty of kitchen roll in place under tank to soak up spill).

Thanks Johnny, Do you have a link to the video? Also, I assume it‘s safe to drive if the temp is normal and the tank is full when checked?D3 2004

I’ve been driving mine for at least a month with the light coming on occasionally with no problems at all. ‘LR Time’ have lots of good videos on YouTube or ‘It’s Not That Kind Of Channel’ is also good.

Mine started 'playing up' back in September last year and I finally replaced the tank in February this year, so as long as your coolant level is actually ok then it is simply a faulty warning - trouble is one day it could be right with the risk of damage, plus it is extremely annoying driving around with a red triangle lit up in front of you !
Search You Tube for replacing coolant expansion tank on Discovery 4 and I think you will get quite a few videos pop up - I suggest watching at least 2 x different ones to get the full picture.
Taking Grille, Headlight, Washer Bottle feed tube, and Power Steering reservoir off are actually the easy bits - moving the hose clips is easy if you have the right pliers (if you dont you can buy a set really cheaply from your favourite next day delivery amazonian - I'd suggest ones with a ratchet that holds the clip open?) Removing clip and then electrical connector to the sensor is straightforward (long nose pliers to remove locking clip - one point make a note of which way this sprung wire fits into connector block - I didnt and had fun trying to fit it back onto the new connector !
Hardest bit is getting the bottom hose on and off without losing large amounts of coolant - mebee you can clamp yours ? Other than that I found it really a straightforward job.
Good luck !

Tank
It is a common issue. It is an easy job to do. Key point buy a decent replacement tank. I bought cheap and the float failed in pretty short order. I had to change it twice.
I spent the £40 to get an allmakes 4x4 branded one and it has been really good.
