What breakdown cover do you use / recommend??

Hey folks, had a search for this on here and surprisingly, there were very few posts about it, other than avoid RAC.

So what level of cover do you have and who do you use? Would you recommend them etc?

I’d like cover that included roadside, recovery nationwide and home start for me and my wife, no need for European cover.

I ditched RAC last year, after 20 plus years of membership. I had full everything (except Euro travel) for all the family. It was getting very expensive. No other complaints, I did use them a couple of times and they were always prompt and effective. Just too costly.

I have a bank account that provides breakdown cover for me and my wife. It’s roadside and get you home or to garage/destination only. When my (now older) children renewed their insurance I made sure that they got breakdown cover included.

If I want to go to Europe I’ll buy it as needed.

RAC via Clubcard points, before that Green Flag. Service much the same and used their yellow taxi facilities a few times. Thumbs Up

Stick your details into a GoCompare breakdown search and make a decision on what you want covered and have a look at the reviews of the company - Simples Laughing

As a caravanner I wanted assurance that we would be looked after if we broke down with the caravan. I decided to go with the Caravan Club Mayday. Not the cheapest but definitely covers the eventualities when you're on holiday.

I've got LV breakdown cover bolted on to my insurance policy with them.

This is personal breakdown cover and covers myself & swmbo (not individual vehicles).
It covers any vehicle either of us are travelling in (even as a passenger).
It covers home start and return of vehicle/ ourselves to our chosen destination.
Cost of this is around £85 pa

Was with RAC for about 7 years and only called them out twice. Charge still kept on going up.

Argued the to$$ with them, as only had roadside, recovery and home start on a joint policy.

Now got:
Roadside
Recovery
Onward travel
Home
Battery replace (nominated car up to £600)
5 tyres pa (nominated car up to £150 per tyre)
European cover
Any vehicle cover

on a joint policy for £22 per month.

If I take the tin tent abroad, than I will upgrade the cover.

I use the cover through my Nationwide Flex Plus account.

Its a joint account with my wife, so we are both covered for £13/month (as well as other benefits). I think it covers everything. We have used it a few times and its been faultless so far. All times they have had someone with us within about 20 mins.

They have recovered my D4 back from Grimsby to Guava LR in Guildford due to a knackered alternator a few years ago, and my wifes car from when she was away from home. They also helped me change a Tyre on the M1 when i had a blow out (Highways Agency requirement)

Been with AA for a long, long time but the cost was just getting ridiculous and had not called them out for a few years!

Have a breakdown cover with my personal bank account so have opted to go with that, even though it is with the RAC.

So far not had to use it................... fingers crossed Smile

Wow, thanks for all the responses!

I’m tempted by the AA cover with the possibility of repairs included.
May have to look in to that one.

Something worth mentioning with the 7 seater owners:
A few of the companies I’ve look at only offer cover for driver and 4/5 passengers. Maybe an issue if you’re out and about with 7 people in the Disco!

Startrescue under 40 gbp per annum, think that is recovery to home and something else but cannot remember!

Did not want home start as have other cars.

Every time I get an AA renewal if the price has gone up I just call them and tell them I don’t want to pay more and they adjust the price back down

Worked every year so far all bar a couple of quid adjustment
