Do these people consider themselves to be true [whatever religion they are] and thus it's ok to be so nasty? Do they expect their actions will get them in to heaven? Does their God cheer them on in their mind?

I do not agree with the Rev. Coles on his theology but that does not stop me from believing such comments at those^ (the quotes, not the OP) are wholly wrong.
That any figure in the public gaze gets vile comms is not a surprise, unfortunately.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

Although the comments were in a letter rather than electronic, sadly the rise of social media has led to a rise in very anti social behaviour such as this.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Social media has given a powerful voice and platform to a whole world's supply of village idiots, who were previously easily ignored and upset nobody but themselves. The sad thing is that some of them are now hooking up with each other online and becoming more popular and powerful.D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

How can you venture such opinions on people with whom you admit to having little dealings? Are you the same with all groups of people? Snap judgements?2014 MY Discovery XS Indus Silver. Sadly gone. Second last LR of forty eight years continuous ownership.

This wasn't intended to be a sectarian thread, chaps. Just a moan about narrow minded, nasty people of whatever background. Please be nice to each other. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

A few of my family are christians, some of the nastiest pieces of work i know, they quote the word but very rarely act it out, I have known these people my entire life, so feel it is a pretty good representation.
On the other hand some of the scruffiest down and dirty sobs I know are the ones who do the good stuff.
I wont even mention wars and religions, oh hang on I just did!

I felt quite sad when I read his piece in the Radio Times about how he’d spend Christmas Day with his partner. Clearly written and printed before David died.
As a Christian (nominally) myself, I hope there is a hell where these mean-spirited, vicious go to. The church needs more Richard Coles.

Agreed. Religion is not relevant. Someone has lost a loved one and deserves to be left to grieve without such vile comments.2014 MY Discovery XS Indus Silver. Sadly gone. Second last LR of forty eight years continuous ownership.

Clearly not Christians if they dont practise what they preach!
Both my mum and elder of my three sisters are Christians and spend a lot of their spare time helping those less fortunate.==================================

I've not seen many of his sermons (his ones from his church aren't put online in any format) but I haven't seen any that mentioned Jesus or God as yet, other than in song titles.
He has stated that his relationship with his civil partner, David, was the most important thing for him, which is not what I would expect of a Christian let alone an ordained Christian.
The main thing is that he calls right what Scripture calls wrong.
His stance on homosexuality and his belief that the CofE's stance on celibacy is wrong clearly goes against Scripture.
Premier Interview with RC wrote:
When asked, he’s happy to explain why he thinks St Paul was wrong about gay relationships and why the Church should to some degree reflect the values of the mainstream
So, Richard knows what God's view is on this and the Apostle Paul was wrong?
I'm not sure what Bible Richard considers to be 'correct'...presumably it has a lot of his own revisions?
This is the Apostle Paul of whom the Apostle Peter said:
"just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction."
And Luke testifies that God said of Paul: "This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles"
But maybe Richard thinks that Paul was wrong and Peter was wrong and Luke was wrong also?
Maybe Richard thinks God is wrong, but in any event I think Richard's theology is wrong.
I wish him no ill. My overriding desire for him is that he has his own Damascene moment and submits to Christ, His Word and His Church.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

So if man / women is made in God's image why does he create people that don't conform to the Scriptures? Why does he allow the creation of disabled and handicapped kids? Is it some sort of sick joke?
Sorry, but we are one species of animal developed through an evolutionary process, just like any other creature on this planet and at some point we will become extinct. God and has nothing to do with it.
I'm happy for people to be who and what they want to be as long as they are happy and don't force anything on anyone else because of their belief or ideology. However, I struggle to understand the intolerance of religion.D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)
