Hi all
New here having bought a 2005 Discovery 3 HSE Auto TDV6 on Friday. Most likely needs a new wheel bearing and lower suspension arm, with an outside chance of a front diff rebuild. Other than that everything else appears to be working, but I would like to be able to check fault codes etc myself, as previously I’ve done all my own series, classic Range Rover and early Discovery 1 maintenance myself. Hence what do people recommend that’s reasonably priced and where is the diagnostics socket as I’ve not had time to explore much due to Christmas and bringing disco back north.
Thanks
Andrew

The GAP IIBT tool is accepted as the best for the job, but doesn't come cheap at Circa £400.
They do appear on here second hand.

Go for the GAP IID if you want the ability to (re) flash your ECU’s
Since there are 17 on the D3, you maybe need this faster than you think.. 8)
I needed it just a week after purchase, when I had to replace the transfer case ECU, which is very vulnerable for water damage
Edit; typoBest regards

Thanks one and all. Looks like I need to have a look at the finances then, does seem like a good piece of kit in the long run.

An icar soft lr2 is an alternative at 50% less but it’s not wireless and not as user friendly. I had one for a while then sold it on. The IID is the best piece of kit and lots of us have them so advice is plentiful Visitor from fullfatrr.com

I think you’ll find there is nearer 17 on an HSE It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
Thanks one and all. Just have to hope all is well for next couple of weeks then. Had remembered about import dues but forgotten VAT is added on top, which is ironic given I run a VAT registered firm. We import so little it rarely crosses my mind and when we do it’s from the rest of the EU so simply gets included on VAT submissions.
Cheers

If you are VAT registrerd, you will get it (paid VAT) back anyway as soon as you do you VAT administration.
BUT on the GAP site i see a price excluding taxes (VAT or sale taxes) of £399.00
which is higher than the EX VAT price from island4x4 ( £360.00 (excl. VAT)) (not much difference but enough to get a few pints for..) add the import tax and you even get drunk
so i bought it from the UK..
i saw that the forum sponsors are even cheaper, but out of stock at this very moment?Best regards

We will and we won't get VAT back as we are under the flat rate scheme for small businesses, so unless the purchase is over £2.5k ex vat then we can not directly claim the VAT. Instead we get a percentage of our sales back which works out, for our business type, of 1.4% and saves us a lot of paperwork.
I have to admit that I didn't think to look in this county, instead I went straight to the supplier, which I prefer to do anyway as most of the time I find that buying direct one often gets better customer service. So yes the £41 price difference, after import dues, would have gone a long way towards my new front wheel bearing and lower front suspension arms I need, but in the longer term it may pay for itself, we shall see.
Thanks

They are very easy to deal with and responces to emails are quick but you do need to bare in mind the time difference.
Thanks. I’m used to dealing with the time difference from working in the oil industry. The best place for time difference is Newfoundland, which, in typical Newfie style, has its own pdf time zone of GMT+3 1/2 hours.

Can you sense a theme here?
Mind you the 2.25 Petrol Series II with Series III wings for quad headlights, high power alternator conversion and a few other bits and bobs does rather break the theme
