Route 66 Scotland road trip

Hi all

im in the very early stages of looking into driving the Scottish route 66 next year (got my sons wedding in Santorini this year so lots of cash outlay in the coming months Big Cry ), plenty of maps, campsite locations etc etc online, and id be looking at a bit of exploring as and when the mood takes me.

any suggestions of notable places to explore ? just going to be me and the dog (at the moment) ?

Im thinking 2 weeks with a door to door distance for me of around 1300miles ??

any suggestions welcome

TIA

Rog

Renting a camper van seems to be a popular choice for that trip. Whistle Very Happy

We have just come back from New Year in the Highlands, Applecross Pass is the highest road in the UK well worth it on a clear day...

Re: Route 66 Scotland road trip

Personally I'd give it a miss.

I'd keep away from this route [& the isle of Skye] and do my own trip to keep away from the flocks.
...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

< ‘tis but a mere scratch …….. it’ll polish out.

We went to the Isle of Skye last year and although some good scenery very very little to do given the eight hour drive to get there. Worth popping across if your close but we'd not go back.

Too late! Campervan and the Scottish Mafia will be after you!

I take it you’ve never been to Scotland?

It depends when you go as to how much traffic you’d pick up if you came to the Highlands. Skye get overly busy, particularly in the Summer, you can’t get moved basically, but the same could be said of the rest of the place.

I know a lot on here like the road to Applecross, but I don’t rate it very highly personally. Id go up it for an afternoon if I am passing, but then only in the winter with snow on the ground. The kids can throw snowballs at each other for half an hour.

Confused. Is the North Coast 500 now called Route 66 Scotland?
I would do your bit for humanity and stay away from NC500 between Easter and October. Can be crazy levels of traffic which is not good for anyone.

Yes, one and the same, some use the slang for the US Route 66 for the Scottish NC500 for some reason.

Shocked What were you expecting / looking for ‘to do’?

For most the whole point is the natural beauty and remoteness, albeit a bit too busy in the summer months.

Not sure what year it got named?

We did a big lump of the west coast to Durness then back down the middle for a week mid September 2010 for our Anniversary week.
Had a great time. Different hotels or B&B each night, like a little road trip.

Our route was worked around an article out of LRE Magazine, by publisher Bruce ?

Did similar in 2014, alternative locations. Again great time! Thumbs Up

There are numerous guides on the Internet. I’d read several and customise to suit.

As an example, here’s a 5 day itinerary:

avoid summer...and not sure about taking a camper van..on our visit we passed many LHD campers (foriegners) who clearly had not driven similar roads.bloody dangerous given road profiles..enjoy

thanks for all the tips... however I think a winter trip will be out as ill be taking the D4 with awning and a tent, so ill be mostly on campsites, or where its allowed loch side car parks etc. Even a farmers field would do Laughing

ive noticed there are quite a few websites offering different routes, locations advice etc etc so ill take the advice above in hand and try and combine a few of them to create my own.

ill cope with large groups of camera toting tourists as and when they arise, either a detour around them or ill just run them into a ditch Whistle
