D3 automatic transmission oil pan replacement
Hi all,
do you know if there is a trick to remove the 5 front bolts of the automatic gearbox oil pan without having to lift the right side of the engine ? or a particular socket....
it seems to me that even with the replacement of the plastic cup with the metal one it is always a painful job ....
thank you

you can remove the bolts with a humble allen key. the problem is how to remove/install the new pan if it is plastic one piece.
to remove you just cut the tube and it comes out, to install a new one (one piece) without lifting gearbox engine is almost impossible.

In fact that's exactly what I did,
and in any case also by raising the right side of the engine to the maximum (40/50 mm) the oil filter does not come out and you have to cut the tube......

Replace with metal pan and separate filter for future use. Only need filter next time

Yes the metal pan and filter is not a good design in that the pan still has to come off to change the filter - at the design stage the pan could have been designed so that the filter could be changed without having to remove the pan.
I used a 1/4" drive with various bits and managed to get my bolts out but on two I was tempted to drill small holes through the cross member to get at them but being patient worked out.

I used a ring ratchet wrench and inserted a Torx-bit to it and secured the bit with a little strip of adhesive tape. Worked great!
But don't forget to screw out the big bold, that holds the tranfer case box. Support the tranfer case box and then lift it up a bit. Put a piece of wood under it, because it is made of aluminium.
That gives you around 30/40 mm more space to work almost easier when dismounting the old and mounting the new oil pan.
And check out VAICO is offering a new plastic oil pan with an unscrewable filter element in it.
