Wondered if someone could enlighten me so that I am pre-armed with the right knowledge to get the right alignment work done on the car:
I am looking to change the front lower arms and wanted to know what could or should be done in terms of then sorting out front end alignment and if something needs to be done with the rear axel as well? As I understand it only the "toe in" needs to be done on the front as the rest is fixed. Is this correct? Sorry, not mechanically savvy so would love to know what wheel alignment actually means.
One final question for those of you in SW London - any suggestions to where I might get the alignment done? I have a kwik fit at the end of the road, but always a little wary of them and the quality that they might offer...
thanks.

You should really get a 4-wheel alignment done (IMHO) after work on the suspension. I was sceptical but, having had it done to both our D3 and D4, it can make a huge difference and pays for itself with extended tyre life.
Both places that have done our cars have had the Hunter systems - I think you can search for their approved centres online. They should give you a 'before and after' print out. Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

Front lower wishbone replacement will alter the castor, camber and toe (tracking). Even if you mark the eccentric washers, it’ll still be out.
So 4 wheel alignment in tight tolerance is the way to go

Get it done properly. Doesn’t just pay for itself in tyre wear, discos are so much nicer to drive when the suspension is all working like it should!

As Steve said above, camber, castor and toe will be out after front lower arm replacement. All angles are adjustable on these vehicles.
A full, four wheel alignment will be required with the car in TTM. It's also worth having a checkup and optimisation after a few hundred miles once the new bushes have bedded in. It's surprising how much of a difference it makes to the alignment! Kev

And it should be done at normal ride height. When I collected my car after it’s last Hunter alignment, it was locked in access mode for some reason. The mechanic insisted it was carried out in normal and he couldn’t explain why it was locked in access. I do wonder if it was because the dash gave a warning to say it wasn’t in customer mode and he panicked he’d done something wrong. 012MY RRS 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography (Current)

Thanks everyone for really helpful info. Just spoken to a Hunter tooled alignment centre who absolutely knew that they needed to put the car into TTM - "otherwise it would be pointless" which did fill me with hope that they knew what they were doing. They did however quote £294 Inc VAT for a full wheel alignment if everything needing adjusting (there was a possibility that not everything would) so it was their worst case scenario. Does this fee sound high or expected for a London garage?

Similar to what I was quoted from big LR dealer in Pulborough, West Sussex, although got a 20% discount due to car being 'old' (2010) and them wanting to have my business.
To be fair, they did a very good job.

That sounds about right for maximum cost due to everything needing adjustment. I’ve had mine done twice after suspension work and it’s not needed everything doing. 1st time they did it, it cost £100 and supposedly didn’t need adjustment. When I went back later I spoke to the mechanic and he said that as everything loosened off with out a fight, he didn’t see the point in charging me for a load of adjustments even though he’d done them. I only asked because I could see it had been adjusted (my witness marks didn’t line up from when I fitted the eccentric bolts) but I hadn’t been charged.
It was something like £10 + VAT for every adjustment made on top of the £80 alignment fee. So I’d say you’ve been quoted about right for London. Just hope it doesn’t need to many adjustments, but if it does feel better knowing it needed to be done and will save tyre ware. 012MY RRS 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography (Current)

The price sounds horrendous to me.
I paid £50 inc VAT the other month with Tyre Shack in Southampton, as recommended on the forum.
That's full alignment of all angles with a free check up and optimise within 3 months using the Hunter alignment rig.

£294.00 seems extortionate to me!
I had a four wheel alignment done yesterday on a Hunter system in Kent for £75.00. Most places offer to check your alignment for free and then you can decide if you would like them to make the adjustments.
