Variable/changing Avatar

How do you get the Avatar to keep changing when you refresh a page? I know how to change the avatar for a fixed change, but don't know how some of the posters on here get the avatar with different pics.......

Help...

I think the avatar itself is an animated bmp file (or was that gif)

It isn't an animated image file....the avatar simply links to an off-site server that serves a different image every time a webpage (in this case a disco3.co.uk forum page) requests said image....

Bodsy.....you could try asking a site moderator for help.... Thumbs Up
(sorry...I meant to say that you could try asking him again for more details Whistle Laughing )

TBH you will find the answer if you do a search as someone worked it out a while back

Paul is right though, it's served off-site, you just need some webspace, some basic Apache and PHP skills and then Bob's your random avatar Thumbs Up

I worked it out myself Mr. Green plus I didn't need any real skills as it's already out there ... mind you, I could do with some decent pics for mine Neutral

I've scaled down to black and white ... if that helps.

I wasn't going to Wink , but just out of curiosity.....why not?

Surely for you it's better (i.e. cheaper) that as many images and files are pulled from outside servers as possible?

Or are you just saying it so that it doesn't get annoying with everyone's avatars changing on every page?

Just curious that's all Whistle

I'm with Martin on this but probably for different reasons. When it comes to signatures. The posts on this forum are really easy to read and identify, unlike some forums where people have pointlessly large signatures and their posts are virtually unidentifiable

The second reason, it's annoying and difficult to identify people (as Andrew says) if their avatars all keep changing.

It's no cheaper to link in files from off-site as this server has a certain allowance of bandwidth and storage which we are nowhere near. I don't get a discount for not using it.... Wink
