Engine Start Inhibit

Hi,

I’m in the middle of changing the oil pump, belts, etc on my 2006 TDV6 D3 and whilst, touch wood, everything is plodding along without any issues so far I’m thinking that when I come to recommission the engine I’d prefer to just turn it over on the starter motor until oil pressure is established rather than start the engine and hope for the best.

Is there a method of disabling the engine start without causing damage to anything else? I’m thinking HPFP here but there may be other things to consider.

Or should I just grit my teeth and go for it Shocked

Cheers,

Colin

You can prime the pump / galleries by pouring oil into the oil filter! It should be the last thing you do before you turn the key. However I doubt you will have anything to worry about. Thumbs Up

So turn the engine over by hand at least 2 times
then check the cambelt tensioner indicator still looks in a good position

repeat. turn over 2 times and check indicator

You could then use the starter to turn it over. (will all injectors unplugged)

Opinions vary, but I wouldn't try to get oil pressure before letting it run! (i've tried it, and in some cases you never get pressure and your just adding wear! )

even when running, it can take 6 seconds to get pressure, so you need to brave it !

Yeah it will rattle for a bit before the pressure reaches all the galleries and the chain tensioners. So be prepared for if to take ten or more seconds to settle.

Thanks for the replies - doesn’t sound like there’s a simple way to inhibit the engine from starting!

It’ll be a few more days before I fire it up - the rebuild is going well but I’ve got other things to do tomorrow and Saturday - hopefully I’ll get back onto it on Sunday.

To be honest I have always just turned the key and waited for the orchestra, haven't had the heavy metal crowd show up yet Laughing
