D4 HSE
After several weeks of reading through the many threads on the joys and woes of Disco ownership, followed by several days of phoning dealers only to be told ‘it’s sold’, we finally found and picked up this D4 around 2 weeks ago...
It’s a replacement for my Puma Defender 110 SW XS and the Mrs’s Volvo V70 D3….moved down to 1 daily use car and thinking the D4 would work for both of us (and the dogs). So far, pleased to have joined the fold and really enjoying the D4 experience . I’m also a member of defender2.net and SELOC.com (lotus forum) which over the years have been my key sources of info for problem solving, chatting about our cars and picking up tips and advice, so I’m also looking forward to joining in here.
All the best for now….
Jon

The Pointers are certainly comfortable and are loving the enormous load space, and the comfort up front isn’t bad either Happy all round so far!

Lovely car. If you didn’t have dogs before, you’d be getting them to go with the car.

Hi - can I ask you have found the swap from a defender? I am considering swapping my puma 110 for a 2014ish D4

Hi James and welcome to the forum.
I really wasn’t sure about switching from the Defender to the D4, but I have to say I’m now enjoying the experience. For us, it’s a good middle ground between the two cars we switched from - still the off road capability, rugged, solid feel but much easier to drive day to day (although a lot wider) and over longer distances is just so comfortable, probably marginally more so than the V70 (especially for the dogs!) and a nice place to be. Fuel consumption seems marginally better than the Defender. Going forward I’m expecting higher running cost and more maintenance, tho remember we were switching from 2 cars.
It’s at the dealership having a new rear wiper motor fitted atm. The courtesy car we’ve been given is a petrol 69 plate Disco sport which I have to say is, em, very very ordinary by comparison. If I’d made a switch to that I’d have been really off.
Hope this helps with your decision.
Btw, I’d still love another Defender some day!

Thanks for the comments - may I ask ref the increased running costs - is that due to more repairs or their being more expensive? My defender is coming up to 80k so I’m expecting some bills on the horizon!

It’s still early days, but I’m anticipating it’s a bit of both. The D4 is more to insure and run (tyres etc), it’s more complex than a Puma, so more to potentially go wrong and most seems harder/involves more labour to fix when it does etc. From reading various posts it’s key to find one with a FSH and to ensure that’s strictly followed going forward - indeed some recommend more regular servicing and 6 monthly oil and filter changes etc.
