Possibly battery fault Discovery 3 2009 |
|
Hi, I’m new to the forum and looking for some advice please...(sorry if I’ve posted this in the wrong section)
I have a 2009 Discovery 3 that I’ve had for 5 years, had a variety of issues but the latest one is a mixed bag (I think it might all come down to a battery issue, but if someone could offer any other suggestion/advice that would be great)
So since lockdown it’s had very little use, 10 miles or so a day (not flouting lockdown rules - I still have to go to look after my horse twice a day!)
On Tuesday I was driving along and the door locks started clicking on and off, then 2 mins later the radio shuts off along with the air con/heater unit and the indicators wouldn’t work. Get to where the horse lives, park up and switch off. Start back up again and everything back to normal. When I get home and try to park up, I get an error message on the screen saying park brake fault and an amber light followed by my park brake not working and that light is flashing on and off. Turn the engine off and start up again and manage to get the car parked up and hand brake on after a few attempts. Left it on the drive on Wednesday, Thursday started it up, all seemed ok no lights or messages. So 5 mins later decided to give it a go driving, car wouldn’t start, turned the key, all the lights flash up like they usually do as normal but then wouldn’t turn over to start the engine. Tried this a few times and no luck. Tried it again later on in the evening and an error message comes up ‘HDC fault, special system unavailable’ something like that...
From what I’ve seen on here about HDC faults it’s usually battery related? Battery was new March last year which is frustrating and main dealer where I have it serviced is closed due to Covid! So might try a local garage that I think is still open.
If it is battery related I’d expect a battery light to have come on when my radio etc shut off the other day?
Could this maybe be cured by trickle charging the battery? If so could someone please send me a link for where to buy one/which one to buy? And also how to charge it please?
Many thanks

Hi there, welcome to the group
I've just purchased the CTEK MSX10 charger off Amazon to keep my D3 charged due to the lack of use.
I had a good read of the site advice posts and the MXS7 or MXS10 seen to be favorites

Chances are not a problem with the battery, simply not enough charging time with vehicle usage. Just checking voltage would be a good indicator and fairly easy to do. Fully charged 12.6v, below 12v expect problems.
I would look for a charger that can test CCA (cold cranking amps) better still measure internal resistance. Modern Smart chargers can be left switched on, to protect a battery when vehicle not in use. Basic battery chargers will cause damage if left on for too long.
I use this one, Ring RSC612 12A, available on Amazon with good ratings. Bulky compared with others, but very useful for testing and seems quite durable. Instructions make it simple to use.

Hi, just a none connected battery issue. If you have loads of different issues the two earths behind the o/ s head light are known to give various faults headlight out and there straight there also earths on lower A post each side. There an issue if you have had a drain tube/ water leak in the car.

The instrument cluster issue can cause this to. It disrupts the CAN and therefor everything goes haywire. All the symptoms you describe are common to the instrument cluster CAN failure. Do a forum search for example such as the one below. 012MY RRS 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography (Current)
