Tow bar

Fixed or detachable tow bar for towing horse box. Which is best.

Fixed for me too!

These are good reliable towbars, I had four years good use out of the first one but, didn’t get time to remove it before somebody came to view my old car and wanted it left on, so had to get another for my new car🤨

tow bar

no contest, take a chance with a removable tow bar, or if you think a lot of the horse or horses as I do with mine fit a fixed tow bar.

Despite mass hysteria, if you're willing to remove the detachable one when not in use and keep it, and the receiver it goes into, clean and maintained, then it's fine. The exception to this is if you have a second hand disco where someone may have had a detachable fitted long term (managing to avoid theft) that corroded the receiver and removed it before you bought it.

If you can't be arsed with that, and want to leave it in, get a fixed. Nothing really between the price of the two anyway.

Fixed all the way.

I tow a 2 ton caravan at least once a month throughout the year.
And tow close to the max towing weigh, with a trailer with a Fordson Major on 1/2 a dozen times a year.
Also make sure you have good tyre's on for the heavy towing as horses are not light.

Be safe & go fixed.

Thumbs Up

 Regards
Ray

It occurred to me today when fitting a fixed tow bar that you could use the socket mounted element (of a whitter tow bar) without the side bracing bars. The socket element is fixed in with a sturdy pin that is locked once wound in from above - if you have fitted one you will know.

Its a hefty cast lump (that must be as strong as the LR removable item) that can then be removed when not needed but fixed securely when needed.

I have twice seen the fixed bar fitted but with no bracing bars.

I think if you just fit that section you will end up with the same situation as the detachable tow bar. The only difference I see when reading the instructions is that the spring loaded bar is operated by an M8 bolt rather than the lock knob of the detachable. Without the braces, I’d imagine this tow bar will vibrate ever so slightly (with no load) and ware the sling loaded bolt hole and the receptacle. Then your in the same position as the detachable.

Not fitting the stabilising bars would probably invalidate your insurance as the towbar probably isn't type approved for use without them.

now that is interesting. so if I got one of them and just used it as a removable tow bar could I put a jaw on it so that I can tow the odd trailer on site. infrequent use and always removed after use. it would never go on the road like that

I know Ivan was selling a detachable hitch adapter with a 2 inch socket, if you got that you could change out whatever towing attachment you needed... simply pull the pin, slide out and install whatever you needed...
I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!
