Disco 4 - SDV6. Using oil
Hi all, wondering if anyone can help with an issue I have?
My 2012 Disco (70,000 miles) is starting to use quite a bit of oil and every few hundred miles dumps a massive amount of smoke (think clouds of smoke for a few seconds) out of the exhaust. Other than this it runs really well and there are no other issues and have not been in the 3 years I have owned the car. I should note that I am only the second owner and it has been serviced annually and very well looked after, has never towed anything or done anything remotely like hard work. My mechanic initially thought it may be turbo issues but has ruled this out and now thinks it is an engine defect and I may need to have the engine rebuilt [gulp].
I was going to take it to a different garage to get a second opinion but before I chuck more cash at this, I thought I would ask to see if anyone has had similar problems I could explore?
Many thanks
James

How much oil are we talking? Does the smoke dump coincide when you give it a load of throttle? Does the smoke happen at a certain rev range?

Hard to say how much oil but significantly more than you would expect - perhaps half the tank for every 5000 miles, or at least something like that. For the first couple of years I had it, it used almost none.
The smoke comes out under moderate to hard acceleration and once it has purged, it does not happen again for a while, presumably until there is another build up. I kept track of how much it was happening and it was approx after 200 - 300 miles of driving.

Thanks - I'll book it in and let you know what they say.
I got the year wrong - it is 2013 not 2012! Don't suppose it makes any difference though...

It is a very detailed technical bulletin, I had not seen this before. The affected vehicle dates work (2010-2013) although it does specifiy the TDV6 engine and mine according to the registration certificate is the SDV6 although I assume it is the same engine? The VIN range seems to match up as well.
Thanks again for this, I'll pass it onto the garage and let you know how I get on.

James,
That's exactly the symptoms my car was giving me. Classic signs that the secondary turbo drain mod is required.
I ordered the parts from Advanced Factors and did the job myself on the driveway with the car driven up onto ramps. It wasn't technically challenging, but it was uncomfortable under the car for the few hours it took. Removing the starter motor was fiddly but not impossible.
Since the mod, back to zero oil usage and no smoke whatsoever. However, the first time I took it out after completing the work, there was an impressive smoke cloud, but presumably that was burning off what was left in the turbo itself or the intercooler. Others have also reported that. Nothing since and it's nice to be able to give it some welly without the smoke.D1 300Tdi - gone
D2 Td5 ES (Alive remapped...mmm) - sadly gone

Just to ask.
My 2010 doesn’t smoke or use any oil at all. It hasn’t had the mod done.
Why would this be an issue on some but not others I wonder? If this starts is it a sign that the turbo bearings are on there way out?
