in need of a new or reconditioned engine - Reviews on RoyalR

Our 2012 d4 sdv6 engine and turbos went toast while in france.

We love the car so much that we are considering having it fixed. In the Netherlands the price seem very high.

I found RoyalRebuilds in Burnham on Crouch who gave very correct prices. Has anybody got any experience with them?

Many here would thoroughly recommend forum sponsor Oval Autos:-

https://www.ovalautos.com/

Have you looked at TrustPilot regarding Royal Rebuilds

https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/royalrebuilds.co.uk

they seem to be well thought of.

Edited to add - See Disco_Mikey's post below - the reviews do look "unusual" !

Not got any personal knowledge of Royal Rebuilds , however their Facebook page looks very busy with numerous rebuilds constantly being done.

Dont know what they quoted however from different stories I have heard 10K seems the absolute minimum you are likely to get away with for a decent job. mine was invoiced at £14k for a dealer fitted
JLR short engine and two turbos . Luckily JLR picked up the tab!

Update

I did not find any reliable reviews or experiences of RoyalRebuilds.
So as per advice on this forum I asked a quote from qp and ovalautos

Qp responded promply, ovalautos i really had to call. Once I got them on the line the story was very detailed and professional and convincing. I asked to just send the numbers in a brief email as i was in the car and later send a reminder email .. no response.

I also got other quotes from my country, ranging from 12k gbp to 20k gbp.

Royal Rebuilds, QP and Oval Autos basically all quote the same price for a worst case scenario meaning the block and crank are beyond repair and the turbo s and injectors are toast as well. You would end up t 8.5 to 9k gbp imcluding taxes. If you are lucky it will be cheaper.

I also called a dutch jlr dealer. Short engines are not in stock in the central wharehouse (not sure if this is also the uk warehouse). Neither are the new full engines. a remanufactured full engine is in stock and would make the prices 2-3k higher.

The dealer was also honest in that these engines fail and that buying a new engine is no guarantee that it will not fail. Ditto for crankshafts. He was also not aware of any “special” extra strong cranckshafts out there. Oval autos also said that that was a load of b.s. . There are apparently also other aftermarket cranckshafts but non of them are the golden solution.

All in all I hope to come to a conclusion with Oval autos who - if all true - to me sounded very good. The advantage being that people on this forum actually have very good experiences with Oval Autos so they became the logical choice. A real pity that their email responses are not there.

As we are ending up with a fully remanufactured engine I am considering running it on 5w40 oil. See other threat

Seeing the reactions and the link on the other oil threat 5w30 sounds good to me.
And replacing it every 10.000km (6.000 miles)
