CarPlay Retrofit with Factory Display
Up until now I'd the phone mounted on the air vent with Spotify streaming via bluetooth which works fine but...despite my best intentions....I found myself being really distracted with the Phone.
I've CarPlay in the other car, initially I wasn't a fan but after using it a bit I found it really quite good.
It's far from perfect but (hopefully) with the IOS 12 upgrade bringing in Google Maps it should do everything that I'd need.
I found a company in Australia through eBay that offered a Retrofit option, it's expensive £650+delivery ...but....cheaper than a prang so...4 days later I got the package.
It was plug and play and needed the usual centre console removed to access the screen etc.
To me it seems to be a GVIF type unit with a separate Android 'Head unit" that has a CarPlay emulator device.
You access CarPlay by pressing the NAV option. If you have the factory Nav you loose this (there is a way around this but) as I hadn't NAV, it wasn't a concern.
It's then the standard CarPlay operation. There is a separate MIC for SIRI access and Integration. I always find that these lack the background noise filtering that the factory mic has so at the minute I've left this out. (When a call comes in the factory bluetooth takes over the AUX and the call is normal...so far)
+ves:
It works really well, it's a fully functional CarPlay on the factory Discovery Screen
Plug and Play (the initial set up and screen calibration is fiddly) but no wires are cut
Audio is channeled through the AUX so (once I'd upgraded the leads) the sound quality is good and free from interference
I'd no NAV on my car, so now I've (marginally better) Apple Maps
-ves (being picky..)
£££
Difficult to position the two interface boxes with the supplied loom spacing
The screen is very definitely Lo Res. Especially compared to the BMW..(If I hadn't got it already I may not have noticed so much)
No track fwd/back with the steering buttons all adjustments are via the screen
Overall it's a great addition...I'll keep you posted

That looks great, I think you fitted that just at the right time, as you mentioned IOS 12 will allow 3rd party map apps to be used, so Google maps and Waze etc.
Let us know how you get on when IOS 12 comes out.David

Very interesting,
I have the same set up as you, Hi Ice but no NAV.
How does the sound work, do you have to select Aux first then go into the NAV / app or does it switch automatically once it goes on?
Alternatively, if you want to use it for NAV, can you still listen to radio or other sources with their steering wheel control?
If you start NAV and then go into phone or audio on the screen, does it kill the NAV and do you have to reload / re enter details or does the NAV / Phone / Audio keys below the screen just cycle through the screen operations while the CarPlay apps continue in the background?
Sorry for all the questions!

@dgarside--'cos your q was shorter !!! Yes it is Naviplus from Oz. I'd looked at another kit from Navtool in America but it involved a separate controller joystick for the CarPlay, it might be higher definition tho'..but the Naviplus integrates really well with the screen.
@ DaveJLBI--
-sound is standalone through the AUX. It need to be selected seperately, it's not automatic
-Yes, effectively the visuals and sound can operate independently. So Maps on display and CD/DAB playing
-Hard keys below the screen work ok, displays switch as before and the apps continue working away in the background there's no reloading required (unless you mess with the phone screen) then it defaults to the CarPlay 8 icon screen

Just got a reply from Naviplus that second generation navigation in Discovery 4 is out of stock. The supplier does not make the units any more.
Does someone have no of something similar so that Carplay can be used in the car?
