Fitted new engine but wont start.

I have just fitted another rebuilt engine, but it will not start. It fires and speeds up and almost starts running with easy start, but not quite.
The iid tool shows similar fuel pressure at the fuel rail to the desired pressure approx. 300bar.
Engine cranking speed shown on iid is approx 200rpm.
The iid tool says n/a when looking at whether engine is cranking or not.
I have tried petrol and wd40 etc. Easy start is the stuff that makes it sound most likely to start.
I checked the timing several times before installing, with the correct pin alignment kit.
I presume the flywheel, or flexplate can only be fitted in one position as the bolt holes are offset.
I have fitted at least 7 or 8 of these engines and have always struggled to get them running for the 1st time after an engine rebuild. This one is the most difficult so far.
After a lengthy cranking session the iid tool comes up with ;
P0336-31 - Crankshaft position sensor A circuit range/performance - Frequency modulation/pulse width modulation failure - no signal (2B)

I think that this code only comes up because the engine is not starting after lots of cranking. I dont think fuel pressure or engine speed would rise when trying to start the engine otherwise.
I am struggling with ideas on what to do next, any suggestions welcome.
