Crank front oil seal leak |
|
Hi everyone, I have a significant oil leak from behind the crank pulley on my 2010 3.0 TDV6 and I suspect the oil pump seal. It had new oil pump and timing belts back in June and has done a couple of thousand miles since then with no problem but suddenly now I have a big leak ( pouring out!) I think I read somewhere that there is a tool to fit the oil pump seal to the correct depth in the pump? Last time I fitted it by eye so I am wondering if the seal is either in too deep in the pump housing or is not sitting square. I donβt understand why it did not leak straight away if it was installed incorrectly? I think the correct seal depth is 1 mm below the front face of the pump and the tool is used to achieve this. Can anyone confirm this and also where to get the tool from or even a drawing so I can get one made on a lathe. Thanks π

Hi, thanks for your reply. No, it was not a FoMoCo pump, not sure what make it was, my son got it through his business π³ I have spent a couple of hours on it today removing the cooling pack to give me better access and a good view of things when I take the timing cover and belt off to remove the pump. From what I can see it is definitely coming out around the seal so it looks like it has become dislodged some how π€ Will be back on it at some point over the weekend to get to the bottom of it and I guess order a FoMoCo pump and genuine seal ( like we should have done last time) π€£π€£π€£

Hi mate
Ok having just gone through this over the last 3 days this is my findings.
If its anything but a genuine pump from LR junk it and get a LR one .
The seal again must be a LR part .
The tool reqto fit it must must Be used .
Hers why
I changed my timing belt and oil pump the timing belt was a gen lr kit .
The pump was a britpart pump
The seal a victor reinz .
The job is easy and although awkward in bits its no big issue .
But after the job was done I took it out for a short run and returned home to find oil pumping out the front.
Strip down to find the seal had come out the pump housing.
New seal ordered and refitted with a bit of scaffold tube happy as I rebuilt it and took it fir a run halfway round the trip checked all good gets hone sane thing .
Oil gushing from the front crank so another strip down.
To find the seal had pushed out again. This time its soaked the cam belt in oil
Stripped it last night and spoke to a highly respected LR man .
Kevin at Steve parkers .
Only fit genuine pumps and seals and use the fitting tool .
So I had to bite the bullet and buy another gen pump and seal and another timing belt kit .
Came home put on pump and fitted the seal with the tool .
Steady away rebuilt the rest and gave 5 hrs before I started the engine .
15 miles test run and all good.
So I'm unsure was it the pump .seal or the fitting method
I'm not sure but that level of work involved you gotta buy genuine parts.
I've learned my lesson here its cost me a good bit more trying to cut the cost and not to mention labour that I've put in .
Buy genuine guys and use the fitting tool .
Regards Baz
