Oil pump replacement, me or the garage?
Hi All
Think it’s time that I may have to bite the bullet and take a look at the oil pump. It’s an ‘08 D3 so already at risk, I’ve had it for 2 years and am madly in love it’s had an intermittent oil leak (seepage) for most of that time (stealers raised it, never called out on mot or service) so this week I used my new trolly and jacks to get under to take a look. Whole Lower engine and gearbox has a “nice” covering of dirty oil over them with the attempt of a drip from the bottom protection covers. The oil appears to be coming from a proper hole in the bottom of the cambelt cover (sorry for bad photo)
Sooo, I’m assuming it’s either the oil pump seal weeping or camshaft seal, either way the front end needs to come off to get at it so I should plan to change cambelt (last done 2017, no pump change on receipt) and pump. I’ve ordered a cheap endoscope that should be here in the week, intending to send it up into the cambelt cover to help identify what the issue is before stripping it down.
I’m looking into whether it’s doable for a non mechanic but mechanically minded person to do over a a day or two (me) at an estimated cost of £500 or should I be sensible and get my local landy specialist to do it for around £1000??
I’ve pulled the parts list together below, locking kit will be eBay, so me, or garage, and is there and normal surprises/kit needed that would catch me out?

Hi, this was a job I wanted to do on mine but getting the starter motor off put me off it, I’ll give everything else a go tho.
I took mine to Andy’s Landy’s in Coventry he did a great job and a good price too. That’s the only time it’s had work done by somebody else in the last two and a half years.
There is a good video on YouTube on pump and belt replacement.

As stated the starter will be a bit awkward but you will also need a substantial torque/breaker bar to tighten the crank bolt correctly. The only other awkward bit is getting at the bolts up inside the alternator bracket, but a small spanner and patience will sort that. You don't need the gasket sealer either! Just smear a thin film of grease on the existing silicone gasket and it will be fine. There are fan hub removal spanners available too if you think you might be unable to release and re tighten it.
The most important bit is fitting the oil seal itself, there is an expander tool available as well as the installer. You could do it without the expander but you need to be really careful here as the seal lip can very easily turn back on itself. Like many others on here I have made an expander tool on a lathe from Ash, but it can be plastic or anything smooth but firm.
As you have an inspection camera coming you can use it to inspect the inside of the seal once it's on the shaft by rotating the seal 360 deg. Do not be tempted to lubricate the shaft or the seal or it will destroy itself within an hour!
It must be totally dry and spotless clean on assembly. The oil coming from the drain hole in the bottom of the front cover is most likely the crank oil seal as the cam's rarely leak. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

No need to remove the starter; just move it enough to enter the crank locking tool - which is missing from your list. Cheap enough on ebay, but may need slight fettling to get it to fit.

Ps. I edit my texts quite often, english is not my native language, so I will edit My “typo’s” etc.
I dont see a new Crankshaft bolt on your list, this is a must, also you do not need to buy the seals that seal the oil pump case to the engine as you can reuse the old ones, but I have known them to be missing .
