Upgrade options for CarPlay |
|
Looking at the different options for adding Apple CarPlay before I get another Disco.
Options are cheaper 2011-2012 or an adblue 2015 on which is harder I believe?
I've been looking at the "Tesla" style screen for the early ones with interest and I've noticed another option which is a smaller screen that retains the control buttons below it.
Anyone got any experience of those? 2003 Discovery 2 V8 GS
2005 Discovery 3 V8 HSE
2022 Mercedes-Benz EQB 300 AMG-Line
2023 Volkswagen ID Buzz Style Pro

The Naviplus unit from Australia seems to be pretty good, and has been used by a few on here with great success. Uses the existing screen and can be removed later as it plugs into the standard cabling in the car. There is a different version for the pre 2013 model year D4 to 2013 onwards Must stop buying shiny toys....

I had the Naviplus Apple CarPlay fitted to a MY13. I wasn't particularly impressed. It was very clunky and slow. I get the impression Naviplus offer good customer service though.
Personally I'd by a 2015, ideally with Adblue (Euro6) and just use your phone via bluetooth. D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)
New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!) Sold
Sold Volvo XC90 R-Design (known as Basil)
Sold - D4 HSE (Known as Gerty)
No longer the Old Buses original owner
231,000 miles and counting
05 S manual owned from March 2005
D4 Face lifted
Still original injectors and turbo
V8 Front brakes
BAS Remap, Allisport Intercooler and deCat
EGRs blanked
T-Max split charge
Hanibal Expeedition rack
Prospeed ladder
Duratrac tyres
IID BT
BAS FBH control

I have the Naviplus unit installed for past 18months (actually removed it when I changed D4's recently as the new owner was not on iOS). Good piece of kit and helps to update the old tech screen. Never found the CarPlay interface slow though on mine, worked when you touched the screen immediately. Depending on your coverage, it could take a couple of seconds in Waze to find an address but when coverage was good, then immediate.
One of the things I like is the updates with iOS 14, better backgrounds but also speed limit / zone display in Maps - although Waze had that with warnings for some time. I use Podcasts a lot when driving, so love that interface, as well as the favourites in the phone call section. Customer services is great too
Am a sucker for gadgets so am just about to pull plug on the tesla version (so will be selling the CarPlay installation shortly, probably 3 weeks depending on delivery of other unit).

Contemplating the Naviplus system, was it easy to fit?

Not that difficult, requires taking the some of the centre console out to allow the screen to be removed. Biggest problem is finding space for the two pieces of kit that come with it, I gave up and have them in my lower glove box, I think you can hide them away above the CJB but am happy enough with them in the glove box. Other than that, once you have the screen out, it is just a case of disconnecting plugs and reconnecting. A few wires but they are obvious where they go. Only plugs to connect together, no fuses or wires to be soldered or any of that faff.
Really modernises the AV screen and with iOS 14, the mapping is much better and a few other bits n pieces. As noted, I will be putting mine up for sale next week or so once my other screen arrives and I install it.

Great stuff. Thanks Dave.
Let me know what you’re looking for if you sell up. Could very well be interested.
Cheers, Toby

Can you expand a bit more on the tesla system please? Where it's from (link would be great)
