Dropping the spare, how might it fail?
Hi,
I need to drop my spare to check, and probably replace during a tyre change.
I know the winch can fail, if it does can I still refit the spare carrier with our without the spare in it so the car is driveable. I assume some secondary fixings like big cable ties may help?
And advice so I go into this suitably prepared would be great.
Thanks.Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

Cable ties help.
The important thing is to not try and winch it up without the weight of a wheel on it

I’ve never had one fail. This includes the two occasions when the dealership wound up the carrier without the wheel on it, and subsequently having to drag it out again. I used that opportunity to lubricate the cable and sprayed a decent amount of good spray lube into the mechanism.PAGODA

LRA trashed mine on my D3 years ago by winding it up without the spare - was under manufacturers warranty - shows how long ago it was.Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.

Never heard of one failing as long as wound in with weight on the cable ie a wheel or someone pulling on it.

I replaced my 2006 winch very recently after it jammed in the down position, luckily I was at home but if it happened anywhere else I'd just tie up the loose end with one of the many bits of string I keep about my person.
I don't know how it happened but when I was under the car for some other reason I noticed this.

Ive just got my 06 D3 and was tomorrow planing on checking the spare was ok...i thought itd just be a ‘wind down, wind up’ affair. Is that not the case?
Can some one share how to do and any tips. Plse. I see above says not to wind it up withOUT the wheel in it.
Wind it down with the wheel on, if you need to wind it up without the wheel attach a rope or something to it so that you can pull the cable from outside the car and keep tension on it.
Just don't over tighten and when lifting the wheel back up, make sure it's settled properly in the space under the car it will lift at an angle and catch on the exhaust shields.1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

put car in off road height and that gives you more room...lower cable and have slack to get wheel out from under car...DONT WIND UP WITH NUFFING ON IT OR IT WILL TANGLE AND FOOK UP..if no spare protector....get one

It sounds like your cable might be jammed in winch housing.
Is there a spare wheel protector in place?
If not might need a bit of ingenuity to actually put a larger downward force on end of winch cable such as by using a car jack.
In extreme could either try cutting winch cable or using mr angry on end of winch. Just ensure spare wheel is supported first.
Would need a new spare wheel winch part number LR064520G
