Advice needed on crankshaft issue (not brought yet)

Evening all
This is my first post so be kind Very Happy
I have tried to search this topic but am struggling to see a definite answer (it might be my poor ability to navigate a website)
I am looking at purchasing a Discovery 4 hse but am concerned about the well noted crankshaft issues. I’ve had many Landies over the years so am not concerned about the “character issues” some have, but engine failure on a car that (to me) is very expensive.
My question is, is the earlier tdv6 with the six speed gearbox more prone to this than the later sdv6 with the 8 speed?
Any input would be greatly appreciated as I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel of a Land Rover.

They all have the potential to do it. Doesn’t matter what age.

Same on D5 and RR.

I think the crankshaft issue is overrepresented on here. People will generally only post when there is a problem. It's no fun at all to post that my car is working perfectly well thank you.
Buy the car you are after but also buy a warranty from the likes of Warranty Direct.
Enjoy.

Thanks that’s reassuring. It is a dream car for me and I would hate to be put off just “in case” obviously I would look for a smooth engine and the best possible service history. It’s been too long since I was in my disco 2 v8 manual

Good luck with warranty direct, looks like they’ve pulled out of the warranty to the public game.

Re crank, it’s like bearing shells in the 2.7 lump, a complete and utter lottery. If it worries you too much then it’s not the car for you.

I believe that the safe purchase is of a car that has been repaired with the change of an original short block or engine supplied by the manufacturer.
Just as a comment, in Russia the company "dedmotors.ru", has repaired this problem about 1000 cars and has a rare warranty of 3 years or 70,000 km, but it is very far.
