| IID Aux Heater Operation Check as Emergency Parking Heater |

Hi,
so with my MY2007 D3 getting more and more difficult to start as the weather gets colder, I've followed Robbie's guide to glow plug diagnostics and sadly I have NO working glow plugs.
At the moment it will start if I've had it in the garage for the night, but I don't want go anywhere where I'd have to leave it long enough to fully cool down in case it won't restart! Its making me very nervous about taking it out at all.
As a stop-gap until I get the glow plugs sorted I've ordered an FBH remote start kit from Romania, but don't know how long that's going to take.
So... I was just wondering, as a stop-gap stop-gap, if I could use my IID FBH function test as a way to get it warmed up and get me home if I go out and it did cool down too much to start? The IID manual says that I only need the ignition on (doesn't say engine running) and the HVAC off to do the test, but it doesn't say how long the test can be run for, or much else about it. Anyone tried it or got any thoughts please?

It only runs for 1 minute I think.
So they only fail to start if the temp is 0 DegC or less.
The tricks are :
1a pour boiling hot water on the coolant temp sensor.
1b fit a resistor and push button to emulate the above.

Hi Pete, thanks for the reply. But now I'm confused.
Are you saying that just by turning ignition on and fooling the temperature sensors the FBH will start up? I thought it only worked a couple of minutes after the engine is started.

EDIT : Ok so now after watching the vid and reading the thread I'm even more confused. How on earth does fooling the cooling temperature sensor warm the cylinders up enough to get the diesel to ignite when you crank the engine. Surely if that worked there'd be no need to fit glow plugs to diesels!!

No. Changing the coolant sensor temperate changes the amount of fuel injected into engine and the engine magically starts.

LOL did and replied just as you did.
So can anybody explain this "magical" replacement for glow plugs?
Edit.... and even if it does, it means I can only go places with a kettle I can use

The solution is perfected by adding a button and resistor.
No need to open bonnet !

Well  me, it only bloody works!! 
5deg outside this morning so took a kettle of hot water out. Tried starting it.... nothing. So popped the bonnet and didn't even need to mess with the engine cover. LR decided to put the coolant sensor on the other side of the rad on my car, all nice and accessible. Poured the hot water, gave it a few seconds then tried again. Hey presto it started! Bit lumpy for a minute or so, but then smoothed out and was happy as Larry.
So there was me thinking I know a bit about cars and engines and looking forward to getting my teeth into how my Disco works and it seems I'm wasting my time. I need to get on the next train to Hogwarts if I want any chance of understanding it.
Now where's that box of resistors I had lying round somewhere....

Spend £6 to covert it to a remote kit, once its up and running.
