Garmin Nuvi – U.S. Maps ???

I’ve just bought on a complete whim & spur of the moment decision, a Garmin Nuvi 250W & haven’t had a chance to explore properly the updates / maps that are available for the unit.

However, we’re off on our Hols to Orlando, Tuesday of next week. So I’m wondering I there a way to download maps of the U.S. & upload them to my unit before we go, so I can take it withus to use it in the rental car ?

I’ve had a look at the Garmin website & they do seem to have a U.S. maps available. Only it’s on a Micro SD card, which would need to be sent my post to me & therefore will not arrive in time.

I'm off to look up Garmin forums, to start educating myself on the world of Sat Nav.

But in the meantime .............

Any ideas ???

Might be cheaper just to buy a US unit when in the US....

I’m beginning to see that myself !

Since posting here, I’ve been browsing a couple of GPS forums & see that the Nuvi 270 / 370 / 670 & 770 come with US & Euro maps preloaded.

Now had I researched this better before I marched into Halfords today to “look” at Sat Nav units, then walking out with the one I got, I could have got the right one I needed.

I’ve also since learned that there is not enough of memory in the unit I bought, to upload another complete map & that while it could live on the SD card, there are users who’ve had trouble with this arrangement.

The general consensus being that if you want both Euro & U.S. maps, it’s better (& cheaper) to get a unit preloaded with the maps. Rather than do what I’m doing.

But this is exactly the sort of spur of the moment thing I do.

You’d think at my age I’d have learned my lession by now……….but oh no Rolling Eyes

So now I think I’ll offload my “new” Garmin unit to someone, who doesn’t need the U.S. mapping & buy one of the above units next week in Orlando.

Make sure it's legal to use a sat nav in Florida. In California it's not legal to have a device stuck to the windscreen - though no-one bothered me last April/May.
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that they're not out to get you.

Yep its fine in Florida - and in CA too, provided you stick it to something other than the windscreen, its an "obstructed view" thing, not a "distracted" type thing...
