D3 cooling Fan operation

Hi, is it normal for the engine cooling fan on my 2005 to increase in speed for about 5-10 seconds every so often, even if the engine is cold ?

I noticed the other day when working under the bonnet with the engine running at idle speed, about once a minute, the fan speed increases for about 5-10secs then goes back down, this cycle repeats itself. I just wondered if this is normal, especially as the engine wasn't up to temperature ??

Thanks

Mat

It isn’t normal unless you’ve just been on a long trip and the water pump is on its way out, what did the temp gauge say?
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Temperature gauge is normal, ie starts off at the bottom and reads correctly as the engine warms up.

I noticed this last week when I was fixing & testing my FBH.... So when I start the car from cold, after about 2-3 minutes it does the fan cycling thing, so it cant be that the engine's warm ?

As I said it seems to raise the fan speed for about 5 seconds, then it slows down again, I didn't time it but this cycle seems to repeat at about 2 minute intervals.

Maybe I need to get my iid out and look what's going on.

Thx

Generally, from a cold start the fan can be heard to engage until roughly 100 metres has been covered before it settles back to idle.(0% duty cycle) If you're engine is just idling and not actually driving it's possible for it to vary the duty cycle until the PCM is happy with the situation. Remember too the A/C and the auto transmission are also dependent on the fan for temp control.

If you have a GAP IID or similar, you can monitor the fan operation in "live values". Once on the move the fan speed is controlled by a abs vehicle speed sensor via can bus signal.

Try turning climate off. See if it stops doing it.

After dropping the kids off at school (proper Chelsea tractor job) the other mad parents accused me of speeding based upon the fan noise alone.
